Women's Basketball Falls at Furman

Greenville, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team fell 63-57 to Furman on Saturday afternoon at Timmons Arena. Despite trailing by 15 at the half, Wofford stormed back in the second to pull within three in the final moments of the game. Furman remained calm and came up clutch with four straight free throws to pull out the victory over the Terriers. Wofford concludes the regular season with a record of 10-19 overall and 3-11 in the Southern Conference.

Furman opened the game on an 8-4 run but Wofford's defense allowed the black and gold to stay right with the Paladins. The low scoring battle reached the first media timeout with the hosts leading 8-6, thanks to four early points from Cierra Carter. Wofford tied the game at 10 when Da'Ja Green hit a jumper at the 3:30 mark, but Stephania Oramas put the Paladins back in front with a two point basket of her own. After Green split a pair of free throws at the line, Kelsey Lambdin knocked down a long ball to give Wofford its first lead at 14-12 with just over two minutes to play in the quarter. The back and forth action continued as Le'Jzae Davidson cashed in on a three point attempt to help Furman regain the lead, 15-14. The Paladins added one more basket prior to the buzzer and held a 17-14 lead at the end of one.

Carter opened the second quarter with five straight points to give Furman its largest lead at eight. Despite Furman extending the advantage to as many as 12, Wofford continued to fight, going on a 7-0 in just 44 seconds to pull back within five at 26-21. The Paladins came right back with a 6-0 run, including four more points for Carter to extend the lead back to 11. Wofford broke the stretch with a layup from Lambdin but then saw Furman rip off seven straight points to take its largest lead at 39-23. At the half, the Paladins led 41-26 thanks to 15 first half points from Carter. Green paced the Terriers with eight points and one assist as Lambdin added seven points and three boards.

Although it was a slow start to the third quarter, Wofford used an 8-4 run to draw within 11 at the media timeout. The teams went on to trade baskets during the remainder of the third quarter and the Paladins continued to lead by double digits at the end of three. Furman outscored Wofford just 12-10 in the third as the teams combined for just nine field goals while shooting under 40%. The Terriers did a nice job in the third quarter neutralizing Carter, who was held scoreless after 15 points in the first half.

After the teams traded baskets to open the fourth, Emily Ryan quieted the crowd with a three-pointer to pull Wofford within ten at the 8:18 mark. The Paladins then turned it over on two consecutive possessions and the Terriers took advantage as Ryan knocked down another triple to cut the deficit to seven. Furman led by 10 after Celena Taborn split a pair of free throws, but Ryan came up clutch yet again to pull Wofford with seven at 58-51. With just under four minutes on the clock, Jamari McDavid made a lay in to pull the Terriers within five.

Taborn missed two more free throws at the 1:45 mark to give Wofford a glimpse of hope, but a turnover gave the ball back to the Paladins. Furman gave it right back to the Terriers and Green made the hosts pay, burying a shot from long distance to make it a one possession game at 58-55 with 36 seconds to play. On the ensuing possession, the Terriers tried for a steal but were unable to find one, forcing the Terriers to foul. After Cierra Carter converted on a pair from the line, Cairo Booker hit a layup to again make it a one score game. Despite Wofford's best effort to extend the game, the Paladins came up clutch from the free throw line to ice the game.

In the loss, Wofford shot 22-59 (37%) from the floor and just 6-23 (26%) from downtown. The terriers had three players reach double-figures in Jamari McDavid (15), Emily Ryan (12) and Da'Ja Green (10). Furman outrebounded Wofford 36-29 while going 22-46 (47%) from the floor as Cierra Carter led the Paladins with 18 points and 10 boards.

Wofford will return to the court on Thursday, March 1 when the Terriers take on ETSU at 3:30 PM in the first round of the Southern Conference tournament in Asheville, North Carolina. For tickets and more information visit www.soconsports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=4000&ATCLID=211654396.
