SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 13-8 by Gardner-Webb on Tuesday night at Russell C. King Field. After a rain delay of over an hour, the game was tied at three through four innings. Gardner-Webb scored three runs in the fourth, four runs in the fifth and six runs in the sixth inning to build a 13-4 lead. Wofford put up four runs in the seventh inning, but the rally fell short.

Wofford is now 14-7 on the season, while Gardner-Webb is 13-9 overall. The Terriers were led by
Mack Nathanson with three hits and two RBIs, with
Alex Malsch adding a pair of RBIs. Mason Fox led the Runnin' Bulldogs with two hits and five RBIs.

The Runnin' Bulldogs left one runner on base in the top of the first and two runners on in the top of the second inning.
Andrew Orzel was hit by a pitch with one out in the bottom of the second inning, however a double play ended the second frame.

After Gardner-Webb was retired in order in the top of the third,
Colin Davis drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. A ground out moved Davis to third base and he scored on a sacrifice fly by
Alex Malsch for a 1-0 lead. With runners on the corners after singles by
Brett Rodriguez and
McClain Bradley, singles by
Mack Nathanson and
Cody Miller each drove in runs for a 3-0 advantage.

In the top of the fourth inning, Gardner-Webb had a single and double to put runners in scoring position. A double drove in both runners to cut the lead to 3-2 and another RBI double tied the game at 3-3. The Runnin' Bulldogs left two runners on base at the end of the top half.
Max McDougald was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the fourth, but after two fly balls he was picked off to end the inning.

With two outs in the top of the fifth, Gardner-Webb had a walk, single and walk to load the bases. A fielding error in the outfield allowed three runs to score and another error made it a 7-3 lead. Wofford got one run back on a lead-off solo home run by
Alex Malsch, his first of the season and second of his career. Garnder-Webb had runners at the corners after a double and single to open the sixth inning. An RBI single gave the Runnin' Bulldogs an 8-4 lead. With the bases loaded a hit by pitch plated a run and then a grand slam home run by Mason Fox gave Gardner-Webb a 13-4 lead. The bases were loaded again with one out, but a strikeout and ground ball ended the scoring chance.

The Terriers were retired in order in the bottom of the sixth inning and Gardner-Webb went in order in the top of the seventh. Wofford had back-to-back walks to open the bottom of the seventh. On a double steal with one out, a throwing error allowed a run to score.
Brett Rodriguez added a single to put runners on the corners. Back-to-back singles from
McClain Bradley and
Mack Nathanson each drove in runs to make it a 13-7 score. Bradley scored on a passed ball for a 13-8 game, but the Terriers left two runners on base to end the seventh inning.

Gardner-Webb stranded one runner in the top of the eighth and Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the eighth. With one out in the top of the ninth, the Runnin' Bulldogs had a single. A fly ball and fielder's choice ended the top half.
Mack Nathanson doubled with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but a strikeout ended the game.

Jake Zoller started for the Terriers and went three innings with three runs allowed on four hits, along with two strikeouts.
Ty Reginelli (1-1) worked two innings with four unearned runs allowed on one hit and two strikeouts.
David Ehmen allowed four runs on three hits.
Tyler McGuigan gave up two runs on three hits in a third of an inning.
Jake Hershman went the final 3.2 innings without allowing a run on one hit and three strikeouts.

Gardner-Webb starting pitcher Noah Davis (1-1) went 5.2 innings with four runs allowed on five hits. He had three strikeouts and walked one batter. Carey Spratlin worked two-thirds of an inning with four runs allowed on three hits. Tyler Johnson closed the game by going 2.2 innings with one hit allowed and five strikeouts.

Wofford will travel to Gardner-Webb on Wednesday for a 6:00 p.m. contest to conclude the home-and-home midweek series. The Terriers begin conference play on Friday at Mercer. Â
