Baseball Sweeps Penn With 5-4 Win

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team withstood a late rally for a 5-4 win over Penn at Russell C. King Field on Sunday afternoon. The Terriers scored in the first inning and had a 5-2 lead after seven innings. The Quakers scored twice in the ninth inning, but stranded two runners on base to end the game.
                    
Wofford improves to 6-5 on the season with the series sweep, while Penn is 1-5. The Terriers were led by Cody Miller with three hits and two runs scored, while Max McDougald had two hits and three RBIs. Chris Adams had two hits and drove in two runs to lead the Quakers.
 
With one out in the top of the first, the Quakers had back-to-back singles but both runners were stranded. Mack Nathanson singled with two outs in the bottom of the first and stole second. A walk to Cody Miller was followed by an RBI single from Andrew Orzel for a 1-0 lead. The Terriers left two runners in scoring position to end the first inning and the Quakers stranded one in the top of the second.
 
Wofford left one runner on base in the bottom of the second after Alex Malsch walked. Penn was retired in order in the top of the third inning. Cody Miller singled with two outs in the bottom of the third, but was unable to advance. The Quakers led off the fourth with a walk and after two strikeouts they added a single up the middle. A wild pitch advanced the runners and a hit by pitch loaded the bases. A single to right field by Andrew Murnane scored two runs, but he was out trying to advance to second. Max McDougald led off the bottom of the fourth with a single up the middle and Ty Reginelli walked. They moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt and a ground out by Alex Malsch tied the game at 2-2.
 
The Quakers were retired in order in the top of the fifth inning. Mack Nathanson was hit by a pitch with one out in the fifth, but was caught stealing second. Cody Miller added a single and Andrew Orzel was hit by a pitch. They moved into scoring position on a wild pitch and then a double by Max McDougald drove in both runners for a 4-2 lead. Wofford left two runners on base after Ty Reginelli walked.
 
In the sixth inning, Penn led off with a walk but were unable to advance the runner. Alex Malsch walked to lead off the Wofford half of the sixth. A double play was followed by a single from McClain Bradley before a strikeout ended the inning. With two out in the top of the seventh, the Quakers had a double but the runner was stranded.
 
Wofford led off the bottom of the seventh with a double by Cody Miller. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly by Max McDougald for a 5-2 lead. A fielder's choice ended the inning. A single opened the top of the eighth for Penn, which was followed by three straight strikeouts to end the half. McClain Bradley walked with two outs in the bottom of the eighth and moved to third on a pair of wild pitches. The Quakers opened the ninth with a single. After a fielder's choice, a hit by pitch gave Penn two runners on base. A wild pitch advanced the runners into scoring position and a single plated both runners to cut the lead to 5-4. A walk had runners at first and second with two outs when a fielder's choice ended the game.
 
Grant Byers (1-1) started for the Terriers and went a career-long 6.2 innings and allowed two runs on five hits. He struck out a career-best five batters and walked three. Matt Ellmyer worked 1.2 innings with three strikeouts and two runs allowed on two hits. Anthony Garcia gave up one hit and had a strikeout in a third of an inning. Jake Hershman earned his second save of the season by not allowing a hit in the final third of an inning.
 
Penn pitcher Mitchell Holcomb (0-1) threw five innings with four runs allowed on six hits. He walked four batters and struck out three. Robby Cerulle went two innings with one run allowed on two hits, along with a strikeout. Jacob Sadowitz threw an inning without allowing a hit but walking two.
 
Wofford will travel to Clemson on Tuesday to face the Tigers at 6:30 p.m. On Wednesday, Wofford and Boston College will play at noon in Greenville at Fluor Field. The Terriers return home Saturday, March 10 to begin a three-game series against Marist.
