Baseball Wins 12-10 Over Boston College

GREENVILLE, S.C. – On Wednesday, the Wofford College baseball team hosted Boston College at Fluor Field and used a big sixth inning to win 12-10. The Eagles jumped out to an early lead by scoring seven runs in the first inning and had a 10-2 advantage in the middle of the third inning. Wofford scored twice in the bottom of the third and then used eight runs in the sixth inning to take a 12-10 lead. Neither team scored in the final three frames as the Terriers earned the win.
                    
Wofford improves to 7-6 on the season, while Boston College is 5-6. The Terriers were led by Brett Rodriguez with three hits, while Alex Malsch and Mack Nathanson both drove in three runs. The Eagles were led by Jake Palomaki with four hits and Jake Alu had four RBIs.
 
The Eagles led off the game with a single, hit by pitch and walk to load the bases. After a strikeout, an infield single made it 1-0. Jake Alu then hit a grand slam just inside the right field foul pole for a 5-0 lead. Another walk and three more hits added two more runs as the Eagles led 7-0 after the top of the first inning. Wofford led off with a single by Brett Rodriguez and after a strikeout Mack Nathanson singled. With two outs, a double by Max McDougald cut the lead to 7-2.
 
Boston College added two more runs in the second inning on three hits and three Wofford errors before a double play ended the top half. Ty Reginelli and Lawson Hill singled to lead off the bottom of the second, but a double play and ground out ended the frame. The Eagles scored one run in the top of the third on a pair of hits for a 10-2 lead. Brett Rodriguez led off the bottom of the third with a single up the middle. With two outs, Cody Miller cleared the fence in left center to make it a 10-4 game. It was his second home run of the season and 17th of his career.
 
Both teams were retired in order in the fourth inning. The Eagles left a runner on third base in the top of the fifth inning and Wofford went in order to end the fifth. Boston College was retired in order in the top of the sixth. With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Max McDougald was hit by a pitch and Ty Reginelli walked. A single by Lawson Hill loaded the bases. A double down by Alex Malsch down the third base line drove in three runs and made it a 10-7 game. An RBI single from Brett Rodriguez added a run. After a walk gave the Terriers runners on the corners and then Mack Nathanson blasted a ball over the fence in right center as Wofford took an 11-10 lead. It was his fourth home run of the season. Cody Miller beat out a throw for an infield single and moved to second on a failed pick-off attempt. He scored when Max McDougald reached on a fielding error for a 12-10 advantage at the end of the sixth.
 
The seventh inning began for the Eagles with a single, but a double play ended the top half. Alex Malsch singled for the Terriers with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but was caught stealing second. In the top of the eighth, the Eagles led off with a double. A fielder's choice had the lead runner out at third and Boston College stranded one runner to end the top half.  Wofford had two runners on with one out after a walk to Andrew Orzel and a hit by pitch to Mack Nathanson, but both were stranded. The Eagles had one runner reach base in the top of the ninth, but a ground ball ended the game.
 
Clay Schwaner started for the Terriers and allowed nine runs on nine hits in two innings with three strikeouts. Jake Dippold (1-0) worked 4.0 innings and allowed one run on three hits with three strikeouts. Austin Higginbotham threw two innings with two hits allowed and a strikeout. Adam Scott earned his first career save with one hit allowed in the ninth.
 
Boston College pitcher Jack Nelson threw 5.1 innings and allowed six hits on eight runs, along with four strikeouts. Will Hesslink went a third of an inning with four runs allowed on three hits. Brendan Spagnuolo (0-1) gave up two runs on two hits. Zach Stromberg added 1.1 innings with one hit and one strikeout. Thomas Lane threw the final inning without allowing a hit.
 
The Terriers return home Saturday, March 10 at 2:00 p.m. to begin a three-game series against Marist.
