Baseball Falls 5-3 At UNC Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – On Wednesday night, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 5-3 by UNC Asheville at Greenwood Field. The Terriers led 2-0 after four innings, but the Bulldogs came back to take the lead with five runs in the sixth inning. Wofford got one run back in the eighth for the final margin.
 
Wofford is now 25-13 on the season and UNC Asheville is 10-26 overall. The Bulldogs won both meetings between the two teams this season. The Terriers had eight different players with hits in the game, with Cody Miller and Max McDougald driving in runs. The Bulldogs were held to only two hits in the game, taking advantage of six walks.
 
In the top of the first inning, McClain Bradley had a double and a single by Mack Nathanson had runners on the corners with one out. A sacrifice fly by Cody Miller gave Wofford a 1-0 lead, but Wofford left two runners stranded. The Bulldogs were retired in order to end the first inning and both teams went in order in the second inning.
 
After Wofford was retired in order in the top of the third, the Bulldogs had a double with one out and left two runners on base. Cody Miller reached base on a strikeout/wild pitch to lead off the fourth inning and Brett Rodriguez followed with a walk. Lawson Hill reached on a fielding error to load the bases. Max McDougald hit into a double play, but a run scored for a 2-0 lead.
 
The Bulldogs stranded one in the bottom of the fourth inning. Alex Malsch reached on an error to begin the fifth inning. A double play and ground out ended the top half and the Bulldogs went in order in the bottom of the fifth. Mack Nathanson walked to lead off the sixth inning, but was caught stealing second. In the bottom of the sixth with one out, three straight walks loaded the bases. A double to left center drove in two runs to tie the game at 2-2. With the bases loaded after a hit by pitch, a walk gave the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead. A fielder's choice made it 4-2 and a sacrifice fly pushed the lead to 5-2.
 
Wofford had a single by Lawson Hill and a fielder's choice to open the top of the seventh. Alec Cargin added a single and Colin Davis was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but a fly ball ended the scoring chance. The Bulldogs were retired in order to end the seventh inning.
 
Cody Miller singled with one out in the top of the eighth inning. Brett Rodriguez followed with a single and with two outs the runners advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. A single by Max McDougald plated a run for a 5-3 score, but Rodriguez was out at home on the play for the third out. The Bulldogs went in order in the bottom of the eighth inning. Alex Malsch singled with one out and a fielder's choice was the second out. A fly ball ended the game.
 
Scottie Wallace started for the Terriers and went two innings without allowing a hit along with two strikeouts. Ty Reginelli allowed one hit in an inning and had one strikeout. Jake Hershman (2-4) went 2.1 innings with three runs allowed and one strikeout. Anthony Garcia threw the final 2.2 innings with two runs allowed on one hit and four strikeouts.
 
UNC Asheville starting pitcher Danny Wilson worked 4.0 innings with two runs allowed on two hits, along with four strikeouts. Cody Wilson (1-0) did not allow a hit in two innings with one strikeout. Hunter Burnette allowed two hits in an inning. Beau Nichols went an inning and gave up one run on three hits while striking out two. Kole Harris earned the save by allowing just one hit in the ninth inning.
 
The Terriers return home on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. to begin a weekend series against The Citadel.
