SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team earned a series sweep of The Citadel with a 6-5 win on Sunday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers had a 5-1 lead, but the Bulldogs tied it at 5-5 after a grand slam in the fifth inning. Wofford scored in the sixth on a double steal for a 6-5 lead and both teams were held scoreless in the final three innings.

Wofford is now 28-13 on the season and 9-3 in the Southern Conference. The Citadel is 14-25 overall and 3-9 in the league. The Terriers won the series over the Bulldogs for the fifth straight season and it is the second sweep in the last three seasons. Wofford was led by
Alex Malsch with three hits and two runs scored, while
McClain Bradley had two hits and three RBIs. William McKinney had a grand slam to lead the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs left one runner on base in the top of the first inning and the Terriers were retired in order to end the first inning. The Citadel went in order in the top of the second and Wofford left one runner on base in the bottom of the frame after a walk. A double led off the top of the third for the Bulldogs and the runner moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, an RBI double gave The Citadel a 1-0 lead.

Alex Malsch doubled with one out in the bottom of the third inning for the Terriers. He moved to third on a fly ball and scored on a single up the middle by
McClain Bradley to tie the game at 1-1.
Mack Nathanson added a double and
Andrew Orzel was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A hit to right center by
Brett Rodriguez drove in two runs for a 3-1 lead, but the Terriers left two on base at the end of the inning. The Bulldogs stranded one in the top of the fourth after a single.

With one out in the bottom of the fourth,
Lawson Hill walked and took second on a failed pick-off attempt.
Alex Malsch singled and stole second base.
McClain Bradley hit a double to right field to drive in both runners for a 5-1 advantage, but he was picked off second to end the fourth inning. The Bulldogs had a single to lead off the fifth inning. After a fielder's choice, back-to-back walks loaded the bases. A grand slam home run by William McKinney tied the game at 5-5. Â

In the bottom of the fifth,
Mack Nathanson walked to lead off. With two outs, he was caught stealing second to end the inning. The Bulldogs left one runner on base in the top of the sixth after a single. Wofford had runners on the corners with two outs after singles by
Max McDougald and
Alex Malsch. A successful double steal resulted in McDougald scoring for a 6-5 lead.

The Bulldogs led off the seventh with a single, but a pair of strikeouts and a ground out ended the top half. Wofford stranded one runner at the end of the seventh inning after a walk. Both teams were retired in order in the eighth inning. Â In the top of the ninth, a strikeout was followed by a fly ball to right field and a ground out to end the game.

Grant Byers started for the Terriers and went two-thirds of an inning with two walks.
Ty Reginelli worked 1.1 innings and did not allow a hit.
Scottie Wallace gave up four runs on four hits in 2.1 innings, along with two strikeouts.
Jake Hershman (3-4) went the final 4.2 innings with one run allowed on three hits. He struck out a career-high seven batters and did not issue a walk.

The Citadel starting pitcher Jonathan Sabo threw 4.0 innings and allowed five runs on six hits while striking out two batters. Jordan Buster (3-3) allowed one run on two hits with two strikeouts in the last 4.0 innings.

Wofford will play at Winthrop on Tuesday night before returning home on Friday for the start of a three-game series against UNCG.
