Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader At UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. – In a Friday doubleheader, the Wofford College baseball team took both games against UNCW at Brooks Field. The Terriers won the first game 13-1 as they had twelve hits in the contest. In the second game, the Seahawks had a 3-2 lead after three innings, but the Terriers had a 5-3 advantage after five innings. UNCW scored once in the bottom of the ninth, but the tying run was stranded with a 5-4 final score.
 
Wofford is now 22-10 on the season and UNCW is 19-11. With the wins, Wofford has earned the series victory. The Terriers were led in the first game by Reed Massey with three hits, while Mack Nathanson had three RBIs. In the second game, Andrew Orzel had two hits, while Colin Davis had two RBIs on a home run. The Seahawks were held to four hits in the first game and five hits in the second game.
 
In the first game, Wofford left one runner on base in the top of the first. The Seahawks had a single to lead off the bottom of the first inning and with two outs a single through the right side made it a 1-0 game. The Terriers opened the top of the second with back-to-back singles from Brett Rodriguez and Cody Miller. They moved into scoring position on a wild pitch and a walk to Max McDougald loaded the bases. A walk to Reed Massey plated a run to tie the game and a sacrifice fly by Alex Malsch gave the Terriers a 2-1 lead. A ground out by Colin Davis drove in a run for a 3-1 lead in the middle of the second inning.
 
After UNCW was retired in order in the bottom of the second, Mack Nathanson was hit by a pitch to lead off the third inning. A ground out advanced Nathanson to second and he scored on an RBI single by Brett Rodriguez for a 4-1 advantage. Rodriguez stole second and third base, scoring on a ground out by Cody Miller for a 5-1 game. The Seahawks were retired in order to end the third inning. Both teams left one runner on base in the fourth inning.
 
With two outs in the top of the fifth, Brett Rodriguez walked. Cody Miller hit a double on a hit-and-run that scored Rodriguez to make it 6-1. The Seahawks had a bunt single to begin the bottom of the fifth inning, but three straight strikeouts ended the frame. Reed Massey singled to lead off the sixth inning and Alex Malsch followed with a walk. Colin Davis reached first on a sacrifice bunt as the throw was just wide and the bases were loaded. With one out, a triple to right center by Mack Nathanson cleared the bases and Wofford had a 9-1 lead. A walk to Andrew Orzel put runners on the corners and a sacrifice fly by Brett Rodriguez gave the Terriers a 10-1 advantage in the middle of the sixth inning.
 
The Seahawks were retired in order to end the sixth inning. With one out in the top of the seventh, Reed Massey and Alex Malsch singled. A fly ball advanced Massey to third and a single by McClain Bradley scored Massey for an 11-1 lead with runners on the corners. Mack Nathanson reached on an error that allowed Malsch to score as the Terriers had a 12-1 advantage at the seventh inning stretch. UNCW went in order in the bottom of the seventh.
 
The Terriers had two outs in the top of the eighth when Max McDougald walked and Reed Massey singled. A fly ball ended the top half with both runners stranded. In the bottom of the eighth, the Seahawks were retired in order for the fifth time in the game. Wofford had a double by Mack Nathanson with two outs in the top of the ninth inning. A single by Andrew Orzel drove in Nathanson as Wofford took a 13-1 lead. Back-to-back walks had the bases loaded with two outs, but a fly ball ended the top half with three runners stranded. The Seahawks had a hit by pitch and double in the bottom of the ninth.
 
Adam Scott (5-2) started for the Terriers and went seven innings with one run allowed on three hits. He struck out seven batters and walked one. He is now tenth in SoCon history with 321 career strikeouts and is also second in Wofford history with 23 career wins. Matt Ellmyer threw an inning without allowing a hit and striking out two. David Ehmen worked the ninth with one hit allowed.
 
UNC Wilmington starting pitcher Alex Royalty (3-3) threw five innings with six runs allowed on four hits. He walked four and had one strikeout. Luke Gesell went a third of an inning with four runs allowed on two hits and a walk. Blake Deatherage worked 2.2 innings with two runs allowed on four hits and a strikeout. Nick Bruno added an inning on the mound with one run allowed on two hits and a strikeout.
 
Game two began with both teams being retired in order in the first inning. Andrew Orzel had the first hit of the game to lead off the top of the second inning, but three straight strikeouts ended the top half.  After UNCW went in order in the bottom of the second, Alex Malsch walked with one out in the top of the third. Colin Davis then hit his fifth home run of the season over the fence in left center to give Wofford a 2-0 lead.
 
The Seahawks had two singles and a walk to load the bases with one out. A fielding error allowed two runs to score and the game was tied with runners at second and third. The Seahawks had a ground out which scored a run for a 3-2 lead before the end of the third inning. Wofford had a walk to Brett Rodriguez with one out in the top of the fourth. He stole second and third base and scored on a two-out single by Max McDougald to tie the game at 3-3. UNCW left one runner on base in the bottom of the fourth after a walk.
 
Alex Malsch had an infield single to begin the fifth inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Colin Davis. A single through the right side by McClain Bradley scored Malsch for a 4-3 lead while Bradley took second base on the throw home. Andrew Orzel then hit an RBI triple to left center for a 5-3 advantage. In the bottom of the fifth, the Seahawks were retired in order and both teams went in order in the sixth inning. Wofford was retired in order in the top of the seventh inning.
 
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, the Seahawks had a single before a strikeout ended the inning. In the top of the eighth, Brett Rodriguez walked with two outs He stole second and third base before a strikeout ended the top half. The four stolen bases by Rodriguez in the game are tied for the second most in school history.
 
The Seahawks were retired in order in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Terriers went in order in the top of the ninth inning. UNCW led off the bottom of the ninth with a double. A single up the middle with one out cut the lead to 5-4. A ground out to Anthony Garcia was the second out, but advanced the runner to second base. A ground ball to Alex Malsch at shortstop ended the game with the final score 5-4.
 
Austin Higginbotham (3-2) started for the Terriers and went 8.1 innings with four runs (two unearned) allowed on five hits. He struck out five batters and walked two. Anthony Garcia earned his fourth save of the season by going the final two-thirds of an inning without allowing a hit.
 
UNC Wilmington starting pitcher Landon Roupp (0-1) went four innings with three runs allowed on three hits, along with four strikeouts. Justin Walke threw an inning with two runs allowed on three hits. Austin Warren worked two innings without allowing a hit and one strikeout. Austin Easter struck out two batters in an inning without allowing a hit. Clark Cota added two strikeouts in the ninth inning and did not allow a hit.
 
After taking Saturday off due to rain in the forecast, the Terriers and Seahawks will conclude the series on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
