Baseball Drops 4-3 Decision At UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 4-3 by UNCW at Brooks Field on Sunday afternoon. The Terriers had a 3-0 lead after five innings, but UNCW scored twice in the sixth inning and tied the game in the eighth. A walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth gave the Seahawks the 4-3 win.
 
Wofford is now 22-11 on the season and UNCW is 20-11. Despite the loss, the Terriers won the three-game weekend series in Wilmington. The Terriers were led by McClain Bradley and Mack Nathanson with two hits each, while Colin Davis hit a two-run homer. The Seahawks had two hits by Noah Liles and Ryan Jeffers had a two-run homer.
 
With one out in the top of the first inning, McClain Bradley doubled through the right side. On a single by Mack Nathanson, Bradley scored on an error and Nathanson moved to second for a 1-0 lead. The Seahawks left one runner on base in the bottom of the first after a walk. Both teams had singles in the second inning.
 
Wofford was retired in order in the top of the third inning. UNCW led off the bottom of the third with a bunt single, but the runner was caught stealing second base. Cody Miller was hit by a pitch in the top of the fourth inning with two outs, but was stranded. The Seahawks were retired in order to end the fourth inning. Reed Massey led off the fifth inning with a single and he moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Malsch. Colin Davis cleared the fence in left field for his sixth home run of the season as the Terriers took a 3-0 lead. McClain Bradley and Mack Nathanson followed with singles and with two outs a walk to Brett Rodriguez loaded the bases. A pop up ended the top of half with three Terriers stranded.
 
The Seahawks were retired in order in the bottom of the fifth inning and the Terriers went in order on three consecutive ground outs in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, the Seahawks had a single to end a stretch of ten straight batters retired by the Terriers. Ryan Jeffers followed with a two-run homer to left field to make it a 3-2 game.
 
In the top of the seventh inning, Wofford was retired in order. The Seahawks had a single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but a ground out ended the frame. Brett Rodriguez had a double with one out in the top of the eighth inning, however he was stranded at third base. With one out in the bottom of the eighth, the Seahawks added a single. A failed pickoff attempt moved the runner to third base. After a ground out, an intentional walk had runners on the corners. An RBI single up the middle by Mason Berne tied the game at 3-3 before a ground out ended the eighth inning.
 
The Terriers struck out in order in the top of the ninth inning. The Seahawks led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk and advanced the runner on a sacrifice bunt.  Single up the middle by Jackson Meadows drove in the run for a 4-3 win.
 
Grant Byers started for the Terriers and went six innings and allowed two runs on four hits, while striking out two batters. Anthony Garcia threw 1.2 innings and allowed two runs on three hits with one strikeout. Jake Hershman (0-3) gave up one run in a third of an inning. Matt Ellmyer allowed one hit in a third of an inning.
 
UNC Wilmington starting pitcher Gage Herring went 4.1 innings with three runs allowed on seven hits, along with four strikeouts. Austin Easter threw 1.2 innings without allowing a hit and striking out one. Austin Warren went 2.0 innings with one hit allowed and two strikeouts. Clark Cota (3-0) struck out the side in the ninth for the win.
 
Wofford will remain on the road with a visit to Presbyterian College on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m., followed by a three-game weekend series at Furman.
