SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team opened the regular season with a draw Friday night at Snyder Field against UNC Asheville. The game ended after two overtime periods as neither team could manage to score after regulation.
The Terriers and the Bulldogs played to a scoreless draw in the first 45 minutes of the match. Wofford had several chances to score in the first half, firing eight shots to UNC Asheville's one. Midfielders
Eva Dailey and
Allie Cardew had a pair of shots on goal but couldn't finish the attack at the hands of the Bulldog's keeper.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the 57
th minute of the second half off a shot from the close right wing by Justine James that narrowly snuck past
Mayson Liner. The Terriers responded with a goal of their own in the 74
th minute as
Marta Izquierdo found
Eva Dailey on a cross to find the back left corner of the goal.
​​​​​Wofford's defense held up strong in the second half, creating seven shot opportunities, but unfortunately couldn't capitalize. UNC Asheville took only three shots total at the end of regulation.
The Terriers defense continued to hold its end as UNC Asheville didn't take a single shot in the first overtime period. However, Wofford just couldn't find the back of the net on several close shots from
Catie Slater,
Eva Dailey, and
Katie Gilligan as UNC Asheville's goalkeeper Courtney O'Malley recorded three saves in the 10 minute frame.
The second overtime period was more of the same as both teams fought hard to earn the tie-breaker but nonetheless came up scoreless, ending the game in a draw.
Marta Izquierdo registered her first career assist while
Eva Dailey picked up her first goal of the season.
Mayson Liner had one save in the match.
The Terriers look to earn their first win of the season on Sunday when they host Charleston Southern at 12 pm at Snyder Field.
