Women's Soccer Falls 1-0 to Charleston Southern

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2018 season at Snyder Field on Sunday against Charleston Southern. An early goal by Charleston Southern caused Wofford to trail for the duration of the match as the Terriers faced several scoring opportunities, but ultimately came up short putting any shots in goal. The loss drops Wofford to 0-1-1 overall.

The Buccaneers scored the only goal of the game in the 20th minute of the first half as midfielder Erin Rush was able to chip the ball into the goal off a cross deflection from the close left wing. Wofford had two scoring opportunities in the first half on a shot in the box from Erin Wolfe and a free kick by Emma Fletcher, however, the Buccaneers keeper came prepared saving both.

The Terriers defense played strong, holding Charleston Southern to only three shots in the second half. However, the Terriers continued its struggle to score as close shots from Katie Gilligan, Maggie Adcock, Erin Wolfe, and Allie Cardew were set aside by the Buccaneers keeper Jazmine Gonzalez. Gonzalez was up to the challenge in the second half, saving five of the Terriers nine shots.

Wofford scrambled in the last few minutes to find a shot to force overtime but time eventually expired, ending the match at 1-0 in Charleston Southern's favor.

Despite the loss, the Terriers totaled 18 shots and five corner kicks. Katie Gilligan led the Terriers with four shots while Mayson Liner made one save. Additionally, Maria Mon saw her first minutes of action at goalkeeper playing 31 minutes in the second half.
