SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team drops to 0-3-1 on the season after losing to Akron, 3-0, on Sunday at Snyder Field. An early goal by Akron and own goal mishap by Wofford plagued the Terriers early on as they couldn't find the answer to mount a comeback in the second half.
The Zips wasted no time scoring in the third minute of play as Ashley Amato showcased her speed, finding separation for a shot from the close left wing that was able to meet the back of the net. Wofford responded with a couple shots of their own by Maggie Adcock and Emma Fletcher, but were both met by the Zips keeper. Akron's second goal of the half came off a corner kick in the 29th minute, where the ball was crossed into a crowded area of the box that unfortunately resulted in an own goal by the Terriers.
The second half proved to be more in favor of the Zips again as they outshot Wofford 10-7, with all 10 of those shots being on goal. Akron's third goal of the match came in the 58th minute off a foul in the box, which led to a penalty kick opportunity that was converted by Eliese LaCourt. Wofford found two scoring opportunities shortly after on a pair of shots from Dani Segovia and a penalty kick awarded to Maggie Adcock, but were subsequently saved by the Akron goalkeeper. Akron managed to control the tempo for the duration of the match, going on to win 3-0 at the end of regulation.
Dani Segovia led the Terriers with three shots on the day, followed by Maggie Adcock with two. Teammates Emma Fletcher, Rachel Shinnick, Hayley Younginer, and Erin Wolfe all had one shot each. Hayley Younginer saw her first minutes of action this season, playing 53 minutes in the match.
Despite the loss, Mayson Liner recorded four saves while Maria Mon notched a career-high three saves on the day.
Next, the Terriers travel to face Alabama A&M on Friday, August 31 for a 4 pm contest.
