Box Score CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The Wofford women's soccer team dropped their first conference match of the season on Friday night, losing 4-1 to Western Carolina at Catamount Sports Complex. Three Catamount goals in the second half would be the decider in putting the match out of reach as the Terriers drop to 2-6-1 overall on the season and 0-1-0 in SoCon play.Â
The first 45 minutes of play was played tight by both squads. Both teams only allowed two corner kicks for each side with Western Carolina narrowly taking the shot advantage over Wofford, 5-4, in the first half. Eva Dailey paced the Terriers in the first half with two shots on goal, but both were met by Western Carolina's keeper. Wofford also found shots from Katie Gilligan and Karen Majewski in the first half, in which both shots came off high and wide respectively. The Terriers defense was able to hold off the Catamount attack until just right before the intermission as Western Carolina managed to sneak a goal in the 44th minute to take the lead, 1-0.Â
Western Carolina never looked back in the second half as they tacked on three more goals to bust the game wide open. After the Catamounts second goal in the 53rd minute, Maggie Adcock responded with a shot on goal of her own to try and put the Terriers on the board, but was once again saved by keeper Jacquelyn Gnassi, who tallied four saves on the match for Western Carolina. The Terriers continued to struggle to fend off the Western Carolina attack, allowing the Catamounts' third goal in the 78th minute off a corner kick. Wofford responded shortly after in the 87th minute as Emma Fletcher was able to net in a goal of her own, unassisted, from about 15-yards out. However, the Terriers would go on to allow another Western Carolina goal in the last minute of regulation to end the match at 4-1.Â
The Catamounts took the shot advantage for the match, outshooting Wofford 13-8, while also taking the corner kick advantage, 8-3.Â
Emma Fletcher scored her second goal of the season in the match while Eva Dailey led the Terriers with three shots on the night. Fletcher, Maggie Adcock, Karen Majewski, Hayley Younginer, and Katie Gilligan all followed with one shot each.Â
