SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team lost a hard fought match against Chattanooga, 1-0, on Friday night at Snyder Field. The Terriers found several chances to tie the score in the second half, but ultimately couldn't convert as Wofford drops to 0-3-0 in SoCon play and 2-8-1 overall on the season.
The Terriers came out the gates on the attack, with
Dani Segovia nearly putting Wofford on the scoreboard in the third minute on a shot that was just wide of the goal. Segovia would continue to fire on several shot opportunities throughout the early portion of the frame as she totaled four shots in the first half. Chattanooga responded with several shots of their own, however, the Terriers defense prevailed, causing several high and wide shots.
Hayley Younginer found an opportunity to give the Terriers the lead in the 33
rd minute, beating a Moc for a shot about 15-yards out that narrowly missed the inside of the post.
The Terriers outshot Chattanooga, 8-7, in the first half while the Mocs earned two corner kicks to Wofford's one.
The Mocs found it their turn to be on the attack in the second half, sending five shots, three of which were on goal, in the first five minutes of play. Chattanooga's Jordan Mueller would break the scoring silence for the Mocs in the 53
rd minute, capitalizing on a corner kick sent by teammate Chloe Arnold to take the 1-0 lead. The Terriers pushed into Mocs territory responding with a pair of shots by
Catie Slater and a shot on goal from
Dani Segovia, however, Chattanooga was able to hold their ground and keep the lead at one going forward. The Terriers made a final push with time winding down, nearly finding the tying goal in the 85
th minute.
Hayley Younginer slotted a textbook pass into the box on a free kick as
Maggie Adcock's shot was blocked just in time by a Chattanooga defender to boot the ball out the box. Chattanooga would go on to hold on to the lead, earning the 1-0 win at the end of regulation.
Chattanooga took the shot advantage for the match, 16-12, while also taking the corner kick advantage, 4-2.
The Terriers were led by
Dani Segovia with five shots, two of which were on goal, on the night.
Catie Slater added two shots of her own while
Maggie Adcock,
Eva Dailey,
Rachel Shinnick,
Karen Majewski, and
Hayley Younginer all had one apiece.
Despite the loss,
Maria Mon tallied eight saves in the match.
Wofford returns back to the pitch on Sunday, September 30 for a 2 p.m. conference matchup against Samford at Snyder Field.
