Hot First Half Sends Women's Basketball Past UNCG, 93-66

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team finished the weekend 2-0 in SoCon play, as the Terriers defeated the UNCG Spartans, 93-66, at Richardson Indoor Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Terriers were on fire for the contest, shooting 57.1 percent (36-63 FG) from the floor and 58.8 percent (10-17 3FG) from 3-point range. Wofford remains undefeated at home (8-0), as the win moves the Terriers to 10-7 overall and 2-0 in conference, while the Spartans drop to 6-11 and 0-2 in conference.

"They're (UNCG) a great team. They're very physical, very big, and strong and I thought we did a great job of initially guarding that first shot and getting rebounds," said head coach Jimmy Garrity. "At the end of the day, when it was time to make plays, our players made plays."

Redshirt-junior Chloe Wanink led the way with a game-high 28 points (9-12 FG, 4-7 3FG), highlighted by 21 second half points, three rebounds and one assist. The performance moves Wanink into the top-10 of the program's all-time scoring list with 1,123 career points.

Sophomore Jamari McDavid followed with 15 points, on 7-of-10 (70%) shooting from the floor, and three rebounds, while fellow sophomore Da'Ja Green notched her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 assists. Green also added three rebounds and two steals on the day.

"Da'Ja did an unbelievable job. She had back-to-back games with 10 assists and we have players that can shoot the ball," added Garrity. "When we get them in positons that they can score beyond the three and hit them in the pockets, good things usually happen."

Junior Cairo Booker filled the stat sheet with nine points, eight rebounds, eight assists, and two steals, as freshman Niyah Lutz followed with nine points, on 4-of-6 (66.7%) shooting, and an assist in 14 minutes off the bench. Senior Marissa Bayer (eight points, four rebounds), and freshmen MaryMartha Turner (seven points, three rebounds, two assists), Alexis Tomlin (four points, two rebounds), and Jackie Carman (three points) round out the scoring for the Terriers.

Both teams had started the contest exchanging baskets, before the Terriers would take a 12-8 lead on a Jamari McDavid layup at 2:01. A Niyah Lutz layup would then push a 6-0 run, as a MaryMartha Turner steal would turn defense into offense with another Lutz layup, followed by an Alexis Tomlin fast break layup created by Booker to end the first quarter up 18-9.

A Da'Ja Green three would give the Terriers its first double-digit lead of the day, as consecutive threes from Jamari McDavid and Jackie Carman would push a 27-9 lead by the 8:11 mark of the second quarter. UNCG would climb back, with both teams trading buckets, though, the Spartans failed to cut the lead to anything less than 10 points throughout the period. A Wanink and-1 and MaryMartha Turner trey ball would allow the Terriers to pull away, as a Wanink score before the buzzer produced a 43-25 lead at the half.

The Terriers never looked back coming out the half, as Wanink would takeover, along with scores from McDavid, Lutz, and Tomlin, to bust out a 27-point lead (66-39) by the 1:43 mark. Two UNCG scores would then send the score into the fourth, 66-42.

The Spartans played with resiliency in the fourth quarter, however, the Terriers were too hot from the floor to be contained. The Terriers went 9-for-16 (56.3%) from the floor and 4-for-6 (66.7%) from beyond the arc, behind threes from Wanink, Booker, and Lutz, in the fourth quarter to eventually take the 93-66 win at the end of regulation.

Wofford held UNCG to just 21-of-58 (36.2%) from the field, forcing 20 turnovers for the contest while assisting on 25 makes. The Terriers converted 29 points off turnovers and 19 off fast breaks, as the reserves aslo provided a spark for Wofford with 23 points of the bench.

UNCG was led by Nadine Soliman with 20 points, five rebounds, and three steals, while teammates Cece Crudup and Amesha Miller followed with 16 and 14 points respectively.

Next, the Terriers will travel to face Chattanooga on Thursday, January 17 for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
