Spartanburg, SC – Wofford's men's soccer team will be celebrating tonight as on a beautiful Senior Day evening, the Terriers cruise to victory over VMI 3-0.
With the win, Wofford brings its overall record to 4-9-1 and 2-1-1 against conference opponents. With their fifth consecutive loss, VMI goes to 1-13 overall and 0-4 in conference play. Wofford has now played, and won, all 12 games against the Keydets in their history. Inside the 3-0 victory, six terriers found the scoresheet.
Brandon Oddy,
Adrian Roseth, and
Josh Mackie made up the goals for Wofford, and
Sam Ross,
Austin Tuggle, and
Alex Dennis each had an assist.
The offensive pressure from Wofford began early has just 14 seconds into the match
Brandon Oddy had a shot at goal, but couldn't find the back of the net. It wasn't until the 10
th minute that Oddy had an easy tap in after a beautiful cross from
Sam Ross that opened the scoring.
Shane Berson made one of his two saves in the 17
th minute to keep the Terriers ahead.
The offside flag played a key role for both team tonight. One being that it prevented Wofford from multiple scoring opportunities, the other is it kept VMI in the game with the score remaining 1-0 at halftime. At halftime, Wofford led with an 11-1 shots advantage and had five corners to VMI's one.
The Terriers' offense continued to threaten in the second half, and they would break through once again in the 61
st minute.
Josh Mackie was fortunate to find the ball at his feet after a rebound was given up by the VMI keeper. Mackie poked it into the yawning net to make it 2-0. It wasn't long after until
Adrian Roseth notched his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Roseth was played in by a wonderful ball from
Alex Dennis that left him one-on-one with the keeper and Roseth made no mistake, making the score 3-0.
Every senior found themselves on the pitch at one point in tonight's game, including goalkeeper
Liam Murphy, who came on with five minutes to play and received a large ovation from the crowd.
"We will always be appreciative to earn three points in the league," said head coach
Joel Tyson. "It means a lot to our overall goal of competing for a conference championship. We have the upmost respect for VMI and their players, what they go through on a day-to-day basis and what their greater goal is. We appreciate the competition. We had a fantastic night for our seniors. I think everyone was able to get in and contribute to tonight's win."
The Terriers will be back in action on Saturday, October 26 when they travel just up the road to USC Upstate for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
