Massengill caps off career with top-10 finish

Wofford finishes fall season at Terrier Intercollegiate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford women's golfer Grace Massengill competed in the last tournament of her career, finishing in a tie for 10th place in the annual Terrier Intercollegiate at the Carolina Country Club on Tuesday.

Massengill, a senior who was competing as an individual, was locked in from the start, opening with a 4-over-par 76, which was her lowest round of the season on Monday.

"Happy for Grace to finish on such a positive note," said Wofford Head Coach Angie Ridgeway. "I hate that we didn't get to use any of her scores this week."

A native of Hickory, North Carolina, Massengill remained consistent, carding a round-two 76 to sit in 17th place going into Tuesday. Massengill saved her best for last, birdieing holes No. 2, 7 and 14 in round three to fire an even-par 72 and move into a tie for 10th place overall with a three-round total of 224 (+8). The single-round score of 72 is tied for the lowest of her collegiate career, last shooting even par in the 2016 Bill Berg Invitational.

Overall, Wofford finished 11th overall in a field of 16 teams, totaling 944 in three rounds. The Terriers opened the tournament on Monday with a 310 in round one, shooting a 315 in the second round before finishing its fall season with a 319 on Tuesday.

"As a team, we are all disappointed to end on less than our best performance," Ridgeway said. "It's been a busy fall season and without making excuses, I feel like we kind of ran out of gas."

Lindsey Hollis, a freshman, was the low scorer for the Terriers, posting a score of 77 in all three rounds to tie for 23rd individually.

"Lindsey (Hollis) played steady all three days," said Ridgeway. "She has already proven to be a consistent counter for our team in her first year. I'm looking forward to seeing her compete this spring."

Becca Earl was the next scorer for Wofford, tying for 28th place overall. The sophomore posted a 1-over-par 73 in round one, but struggled in round two. Earl battled on Tuesday, shooting a 77 to finish the fall season. Lina Settelmayer finished in a tie for 39th place while Emma King rounded out the scoring for the Terriers.

"I'm happy with the effort that this group puts forth. I'm already looking forward to spring season with this group."

Wofford will open up its 2019 spring schedule on February 21, competing in the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational in Greensboro, Georgia.
