SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford women's soccer team defeated VMI 2-1 on Friday night, as
Dani Segovia and
Katie Gilligan's goals powered the Terriers past a late surge from the Keydets.
All six of Wofford's shots were on frame, as the Terriers had an 8-to-2 advantage in corner kicks. Goalkeeper
Maria Mon totaled four crucial saves, including one with just over a minute to play that preserved the 2-1 lead. The Terriers improve to 4-7 on the season, going 1-2 in SoCon play. Wofford remains home for its next three games, hosting UNCG on Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Terriers wasted little time getting on the board as
Paige Miller found Segovia in the offensive third and Segovia beat a defender to bury the goal into the bottom right side of the net. Less than five minutes later, Wofford earned a penalty kick and Gilligan fired the ball to the lower left side of the net, doubling the Terriers lead.
Wofford continued to press, with VMI not threatening until the 30th minute, but Mon calmly collected her second save of the half. Mackenzie Guest and
Karen Majewski each had opportunities to extend the lead before the break, but Noelle Heilpern kept the score 2-0.
The two sides traded shots to open the second but neither would convert. With time winding down, Mon was given a yellow card for time wasting and VMI was subsequently awarded a free kick which Maria Vargas converted to cut the lead in half with just three minutes to play. The Keydets had one more chance as Maggie Beckman ripped a shot but Mon was in position to secure the ball and the win for the Terriers.
