SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's basketball team will open its 2019-20 season on Tuesday night, welcoming Erskine to Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium for a 7 p.m. tip.
Last season saw Wofford set new marks in wins (30), wins in a regular season (26) and consecutive wins (21), cracking the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time and finishing at No. 19 overall. The 2019-20 squad will be under the direction of first-year head coach Jay McAuley, who served as the associate head coach for the past two seasons at Wofford.
"Our team is excited to tip it off Tuesday night," McAuley said. "It has been a productive preseason and the players are looking forward to competing against someone else."
Despite losing SoCon Athlete of the Year Fletcher Magee (20.3 ppg) and First Team All-SoCon member Cameron Jackson (14.5 ppg), the Terriers return two key starters in Nathan Hoover and Storm Murphy. Hoover is the team's top returning scorer, averaging 13.6 points per game as a junior, shooting 45.7 percent from the floor. Murphy, meanwhile, dished out a team-high 112 assists in 34 games played as a sophomore, scoring 8.0 points per contest.
Wofford looks to get a boost from fifth-year senior Trevor Stumpe and junior Chevez Goodwin who both provided a spark off the bench last season, along with its group of freshman. Stumpe will provide versatility down low while Goodwin looks to take the bulk of the minutes down low for the Terriers. Â
"We have a handful of experienced players that will help lead the way early on, such as Nathan and Storm, but I'm really excited to see the return of Stumpe and Goodwin, as well as the addition of some of our freshman."
The game will be broadcast on ESPN3 and you can listen to the broadcast on wofford.leanplayer.com and on TuneIn.Â
