Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Ohio

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball split a doubleheader with Ohio University on Saturday at Russell C. King Field. The Bobcats won the first game 6-4 on the strength of 15 hits and turning four double plays. The Terriers had 12 hits in the second game and secured a 5-2 win.
 
Wofford opens the season 2-1, while the Bobcats are 1-2. The Terriers were led in the first game by Lawson Hill with two hits and two RBIs, with Brett Rodriguez adding two hits. In the second game, Hill had three hits and two RBIs. The Wofford pitching staff had 24 strikeouts on the day, including seven each by Hayes Heinecke and Reece Maniscalco.
 
In the first game of the doubleheader, Ohio had a single with two outs in the top of the first inning. A double by Trevor Hafner drove in the runner for a 1-0 lead. Another single put runners on the corners before a fly ball ended the top half. With two outs in the bottom of the first, Colin Davis doubled and he scored on a single by Brett Rodriguez. A double by Lawson Hill drove in Rodriguez for a 2-1 lead. Walks to Hudson Byorick and John Dempsey loaded the bases, but a fielder's choice ended the first inning.
 
The Bobcats had four singles in the top of the second inning, but were only able to score one run to tie the game at 2-2. Wofford was retired in order to end the second frame. In the top of the third the Bobcats scored three runs on four hits and left the bases loaded. In the Wofford half of the third, Brett Rodriguez reached on an error before a double play ended the inning.
 
In the top of the fourth, the Bobcats stranded one runner. Wofford had two runners on base in the bottom of the fourth as John Dempsey walked and Mike Brown was hit by a pitch, but both were stranded. The Bobcats ended the fifth inning with a pair of runners on base. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Brett Rodriguez doubled. A single by Lawson Hill scored Rodriguez and Hill moved to second on the throw. Hudson Byorick drove in Hill on a single as the Terriers cut the lead to 5-4.
 
After a lead-off single in the top of the sixth inning, a sacrifice bunt advanced the runner. Back-to-back wild pitches allowed a run to score for a 6-4 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Mike Brown had a bunt single for the Terriers before a double play ended the inning. The Bobcats had a single to open the seventh inning, but the runner was thrown out at second. Wofford led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk by Alec Cargin and a single by Colin Davis. A double play and fly ball ended the scoring chance for the Terriers.
 
The Bobcats were retired in order in the top of the eighth inning. Hudson Byorick walked to lead off the bottom of the eighth. Matt Pagano entered as a pinch runner and moved to second on a balk. Nolen Hester drew a pinch hit walk and Reed Massey reached on a fielding error on a sacrifice bunt to load the bases. A fielder's choice with the lead runner out at home and then a 6-4-3 double play ended the inning. In the ninth, the Bobcats left two runners on base and Wofford was retired in order to end the game.
 
Cameron Bloodworth (0-1) started for the Terriers and allowed five runs on eleven hits in 2.2 innings. Jake Hershman threw 3.1 innings with one run allowed on two hits, along with five strikeouts and three walks. Matt Ellmyer went the final three innings with two hits allowed and a career-high five strikeouts.
 
Ohio starter Jack Liberatore went 3.1 innings with two runs allowed on three hits, along with one strikeout. Joe Rock (1-0) threw 2.2 innings and allowed two runs on five hits while striking out three. Chance Harris allowed one hit in an inning. Nick Kamrada did not allow a hit in an inning on the mound. Brett Manis earned the save by going the final inning with two strikeouts.
 
The second game began with the Bobcats taking a 2-0 lead after a double by Rudy Rott to left center drove in a pair of runs. Wofford led off with a walk to Andrew Orzel and a single by Alec Cargin. They advanced on a sacrifice bunt and then a single by Brett Rodriguez scored Orzel. A single by Lawson Hill moved Cargin across home and the game was tied at 2-2 after the first inning.
 
In the second inning, the Bobcats were retired in order and the Terriers left one on base after a single by Mike Brown. Ohio left one runner on base in the top of the third inning. With one out in the bottom of the third, Colin Davis doubled. Lawson Hill singled with two outs and scored Davis for a 3-2 advantage.
 
Ohio stranded two runners in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Mike Brown walked and then scored on a double off the wall by Andrew Orzel to give Wofford a 4-2 lead. Both teams retired in order in the fifth inning. The Bobcats left two runners on base in the top of the sixth inning after a single and a walk. Hudson Byorick led off the bottom of the sixth with a double and with one out a double by Reed Massey gave Wofford a 5-2 advantage.
 
The Bobcats had runners at first and third with two outs in the top of the seventh inning before a fly ball ended the scoring chance. Wofford left two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh and in the top of the eighth Ohio stranded one after a single. In the bottom of the eighth, Mike Brown singled and Alec Cargin doubled but did not score.  With one out in the top of the ninth, Aaron Levy singled for the Bobcats. After a strikeout, a fielder's choice ended the contest.
 
Hayes Heinecke (1-0) started for the Terriers and went five innings with two runs allowed on three hits. He struck out seven batters with one walk issued. Reece Maniscalco threw the final four innings and had a career-high seven strikeouts without allowing a run on just two hits.
 
Ohio starter Eamon Horwedel (0-1) allowed four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts in 3.2 innings. Matt Brosky worked 2.1 innings with one run allowed on two hits, along with two strikeouts. Braxton Kelly went the final two innings with three hits allowed.
 
The Terriers will take the field on Wednesday, February 20, when they host UNC Asheville at King Field.
