CLINTON, S.C. – The Wofford women's lacrosse team won its 2019 season opener on Saturday, holding on to defeat Presbyterian 14-13.
Freshman Ally Furnari led the scoring for the Terriers, totaling four goals in her collegiate debut while Hannah Wurzel, Elisabeth Ralph and Grace Geraghty each scored two goals, while sophomore goalie Kelsey Thompson totaled seven saves in the win.Â
As a team, Wofford outshot Presbyterian by 10 (34-24), with 29 shots on goal. The Terriers also won the turnover battle, committing just 19 while forcing 26. The possession battle was crucial in the victory, as Wofford picked up 24 ground balls and won 16 of the 29 draw controls.
Presbyterian struck first, scoring less than two minutes into the game, but 30 seconds later Shannon Wulff found Emily Elstun for the equalizer. The Blue Hose would jump out to a 5-3 lead past the midway point of the first half, but Wofford rallied to score four unanswered and take a 7-5 lead into the break. Â
Presbyterian scored three of the first four goals to open the second half, knotting the game up at 8-8. Wurzel and Furnari each finished free position shots to put the Terriers back up by two goals. With under 10 minutes to play, JoJo Franklin found Geraghty for the goal to make the score 14-11 in favor of Wofford.
After failing to cut into the deficit, Presbyterian made a late charge, scoring two goals in the last two minutes to cut the advantage to just one. Wofford's Ralph would win a crucial draw control, as the Terriers clinched the 14-13 victory.
Wofford has a week off before traveling to Buies Creek, North Carolina, to face Campbell at 1 p.m.
