Baseball Bulldozes UNC Asheville 14-2

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team defeated UNC Asheville 14-2 on Tuesday at Russell C. King Field. The Bulldogs scored the first two runs, but the Terriers took the lead in the third inning. In the fifth inning, Wofford put the game away with eight runs.
 
Wofford opens the season 4-2, while the Bulldogs are 1-6. The Terriers were led by Brett Rodriguez with four hits and two RBIs, with Andrew Orzel adding three hits and two RBIs. Greg Gasparro led the Bulldogs with three hits in the game.
 
The Bulldogs had a pair of singles to open the game and then a fielding error with one out allowed both runners to score. Two ground-outs ended the top of the first with the Bulldogs holding a 2-0 lead. Andrew Orzel had a double to lead-off the bottom of the first. He moved to third on a fly ball by Colin Davis and scored on a throwing error on the play to cut the lead to 2-1.
 
After the Bulldogs were retired in order in the top of the second, John Dempsey had his first career hit. A double off the wall by Mike Brown scored Dempsey to tie the game at 2-2. In the top of the third, the Bulldogs left one runner on base. With one out in the bottom of the third, Colin Davis singled and stole second base. A single through the left side by Brett Rodriguez scored Davis to give Wofford a 3-2 lead. Lawson Hill executed a hit-and-run as the Terriers had runners on the corners. A ground out by Alec Cargin advanced the runners for a 4-2 advantage.
 
Both teams were retired in order in the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth, a single and a pair of walks had the bases loaded before a fly ball ended the inning for the Bulldogs. Colin Davis opened the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run, his first of the season, to give Wofford a 5-2 lead. Brett Rodriguez singled and Lawson Hill doubled to put runners in scoring position. A single by Alec Cargin drove in one run and a walk by Hudson Byorick loaded the bases. A triple by Reed Massey scored two runs, with Byorick out at home on the play as the Terriers pushed the lead to 8-2. John Dempsey drew a walk and Mike Brown was hit by a pitch to load the bases again. An infield single by Andrew Orzel plated a run and a wild pitch allowed runners to advance for a 10-2 advantage. Colin Davis walked to have the bases loaded for a single by Brett Rodriguez and a sacrifice fly by Lawson Hill. A ground out ended the inning with the Terriers holding a 12-2 lead.  
 
The Bulldogs went in order in the top of the sixth inning and Wofford left one runner on base in the bottom of the sixth after a hit by pitch. In the top of the seventh, the Bulldogs had a pair of singles but were unable to score. Andrew Orzel cleared the trees in left field for a leadoff home run in the bottom of the seventh to give Wofford a 13-2 advantage.
 
One runner was left on base in the top of the eighth by the Bulldogs after a walk. Wofford loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth with a walk by Nolen Hester, Matty Brown being hit by a pitch and a walk by Josh Congdon. A sacrifice fly by Michael Wynne drove in a run, his first career RBI, making it a 14-2 lead. The Terriers left two on base to end the inning. In the top of the ninth, the Bulldogs led off with a walk and added a single with two outs. A strikeout ended the game.
 
Cameron Bloodworth (1-1) started and went four innings with two unearned runs allowed on three hits, with two strikeouts. Matt Ellmyer threw an inning with one hit allowed and two strikeouts. Austin Higginbotham worked a clean inning. Jake Zoller threw two innings with two hits allowed and three strikeouts. Ty Reginelli threw the ninth and gave up one hit with three strikeouts.
 
UNC Asheville starter Danny Wilson (0-1) threw three innings with four runs allowed on six hits. Joe Sondock went an inning with four runs allowed on four hits, along with one strikeout. Trey Jernigan gave up four runs on two hits in a third of an inning. Austin Fahr went 2.2 innings with one run allowed on three hits. David Dobson allowed one run in the final inning.
 
On Wednesday, Wofford will travel to Lexington, S.C. to face Charleston Southern at 6:00 p.m. before returning home for a four-game weekend series against Harvard beginning on Friday night.
