Baseball Earns Power 5 Win Over Ohio State

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Tuesday afternoon, the Wofford College baseball team rallied for an 8-6 win over Ohio State University at Russell C. King Field. The Buckeyes took a 5-1 lead after three innings of play, but the Terriers chipped away at the lead and were down 6-5 after six innings. In the bottom of the seventh, Wofford plated three runs to take an 8-6 advantage and earn the win.
 
Wofford opens the season 11-6, while Ohio State is 7-9 overall. It marked the tenth time in the last eleven seasons the Terriers have posted a win over a Power 5 conference opponent. The Terriers were led by John Dempsey with two hits and three RBIs, while Lawson Hill added three hits. Brady Cherry had three hits and two RBIs to lead the Buckeyes.
 
The Buckeyes got on the board in the top of the first inning with two runs on three hits. Wofford got one run back when Brett Rodriguez reached on an error and then a single by Lawson Hill along with an error enabled Rodriguez to score. In the top of the second inning, a hit by pitch was followed by two singles that made it a 4-1 game in favor of Ohio State.  
 
Josh Congdon led off the bottom of the second inning with a double and Mike Brown walked with two outs, but both runners were stranded. Ohio State added two singles in the top of the third inning, with a run scoring on a sacrifice fly for a 5-1 lead. Lawson Hill had a single with two outs in the bottom of the third, but was unable to advance. The Buckeyes were retired in order in the top of the fourth inning.
 
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Matty Brown was hit by a pitch and Mike Brown walked. A double down the left line by Andrew Orzel scored both runners to cut the lead to 5-3. In the top of the fifth inning, a single with one out was followed by a double with two outs as the Buckeyes pushed the lead to 6-3. The Terriers got one run back on a solo home run by Brett Rodriguez to open the bottom of the fifth.
 
The Buckeyes left one runner on base in the top of the sixth after a double. John Dempsey led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run that hit the scoreboard in right field to make it a 6-5 game. The Buckeyes had a single with two outs in the top of the seventh. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Brett Rodriguez had an infield single and a single by Lawson Hill gave the Terriers runners on the corners. A sacrifice fly by Hudson Byorick scored Rodriguez to tie the game at 6-6. Josh Congdon added a single and then a double off the wall in right field by John Dempsey drove in both runners for an 8-6 lead.
 
Ohio State was retired in order in the top of the eighth and Wofford went in order in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Buckeyes had a single to lead off the ninth inning, but two strikeouts and a ground out ended the game.
 
Wofford starter David Yourke went four innings with five runs allowed on seven hits, along with one strikeout. Anthony Garcia threw 2.2 innings with one run allowed on four hits and a strikeout. Rasesh Pandya (2-0) faced one batter and had one out. Jake Hershman earned his first save of the season by going the final two innings with one hit allowed and four strikeouts.
 
Jake Vance started for Ohio State and went 5.1 innings with five runs allowed on six hits, while striking out three batters. Andrew Magno (0-2) allowed three runs on four hits in 2.2 innings.
 
The Terriers will host Bryant at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13, before a home weekend series against Lafayette.
