Baseball Withstands Florida A&M Rally For 14-11 Win

Tallahassee, Fla. – On Saturday afternoon, the Wofford College baseball team withstood a late rally to secure a 14-11 win over Florida A&M at Moore-Kittles Field. The Terriers took a 6-1 lead after three innings and held a 10-6 advantage through six innings. With Wofford up 14-7 in the ninth inning, the Rattlers rallied to score four runs before a strikeout ended the game.
 
Wofford is 17-8 on the season, while Florida A&M is 10-15 overall. The weekend series is tied at one game each. The Terriers had 15 hits in the game, with Andrew Orzel, Lawson Hill and John Dempsey each having three hits. Dempsey drove in four runs. Seyjuan Lawrence and Eric Blanc each had two hits for the Rattlers.
 
Andrew Orzel and Hudson Byorick opened the game with singles. A single by Lawson Hill plated a run and Byorick scored on a sacrifice bunt for a 2-0 lead. The Rattlers had one hit in the bottom of the first. With two outs in the second inning, Mike Brown reached on an error and Andrew Orzel singled. Brown scored on a passed ball and Hudson Byorick walked. A single by Brett Rodriguez scored Orzel for a 3-0 advantage. Florida A&M doubled to lead off the bottom of the second and scored on a sacrifice fly.
 
Lawson Hill singled to start the third inning and John Dempsey homered to push the lead to 5-1. After the Rattlers had a single in the bottom of the third, Mike Brown opened the fourth with a double and he stole third. A double by Andrew Orzel made it 6-1. Hudson Byorick walked and a fielder's choice plated a run. John Dempsey added an RBI double for a 9-1 lead. The Rattlers responded in the bottom of the fourth with five runs on three hits as they took advantage of two Wofford errors to cut the lead to 9-6.
 
Wofford left two runners on base in the top of the fifth and the Rattlers went in order to end the inning. In the sixth, a double by John Dempsey plated a run to make it a 10-6 game. After the Rattlers left one on base in the bottom of the sixth inning, Mike Brown singled with one out in the top of the seventh. He stole second and third, then scored on an error for an 11-6 lead. Florida A&M got one run back in the bottom of the seventh after a triple and sacrifice bunt.
 
In the top of the eighth, Colin Davis hit a two-run homer for the Terriers as the lead was pushed to 13-7. The Rattlers left two on base in the bottom of the eighth. Wofford took advantage of a pair of errors in the top of the ninth and Lawson Hill reached on a fielder's choice that enabled a run to score and had a 14-7 lead. In the bottom of the ninth with two outs, the bases were loaded when a double cleared the bases to make it 14-10. A single drove in another run before a strikeout ended the game at 14-11.
 
Hayes Heinecke (5-0) started for Wofford and went 6.0 innings with six runs allowed on seven hits, along with six strikeouts. Reece Maniscalco threw 2.2 innings with five runs allowed on four hits while striking out four. Anthony Garcia earned his second save of the season by striking out the lone batter he faced.  
 
Florida A&M starter Josh Hancock (2-3) threw 3.2 innings with nine runs allowed on ten hits. Josh Wilson added 1.2 innings with one run allowed. Dylan Carlson went 1.2 innings and gave up one run with four strikeouts, while Pedro de los Rios gave up two runs on two hits in an inning. Chris Clark threw the final inning with one run allowed.  
 
The Terriers conclude the series against Florida A&M on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
