Baseball Falls 5-4 At Presbyterian

CLINTON, S.C. – On Wednesday afternoon, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 5-4 at the PC Baseball Complex. The Blue Hose scored twice in the first inning and the Terriers took a 3-2 lead with two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Presbyterian tied it at 3-3 in the eighth. Matty Brown had a solo home run in the ninth, but the Blue Hose scored twice in the bottom of the ninth for the win.
 
Wofford is 17-10 on the season, while Presbyterian is 11-14 overall. The teams will meet again on April 10 in Spartanburg. The Terriers were led by Brett Rodriguez and Matty Brown with two hits each. Jonathan White had three hits to lead the Blue Hose.
 
Andrew Orzel had a hit to right field to open the game but was out trying to stretch it to a double. Brett Rodriguez added a single before a fly ball ended the top of the first inning. With two runners on base after an error and single, a double drove in both runners for a 2-0 lead. A pair of strikeouts ended the first inning.
 
Wofford had a pair of singles by John Dempsey and Josh Congdon in the top of the second inning. With two outs a single up the middle by Mike Brown scored Dempsey to cut the lead to 2-1. The Blue Hose were retired in order to end the second inning. Brett Rodriguez was hit by a pitch with one out in the top of the third and a single by Lawson Hill gave the Terriers runners on the corners. A double play ended the scoring chance.
 
The Blue Hose left two runners on base in the bottom of the third after a double and walk. Josh Congdon was hit by a pitch with one out and Matty Brown followed with a single, but both were stranded in the fourth. A walk in the bottom of the fourth was followed by a double for the Blue Hose. A pop up and two strikeouts ended the inning. Wofford was retired in order in the top of the fifth inning. Presbyterian led off the bottom of the fifth with a single but left the runner at second.
 
Both teams were retired in order in the sixth inning. With one out in the top of the seventh, Mike Brown, Andrew Orzel and Hudson Byorick walked to load the bases. A single up the middle by Brett Rodriguez drove in two runs to give Wofford a 3-2 lead. A double play ended the top half of the inning. The Blue Hose went in order in the bottom of the seventh and the Terriers were retired in order in the top of the eighth.
 
In the bottom of the eighth, the Blue Hose had an infield single to lead off the inning. With one out, a sacrifice fly tied the game at 3-3 and a strikeout ended the inning. Matty Brown led off the ninth inning with a solo home run over the fence in left field to give Wofford a 4-3 advantage. It was his second career home run. The Blue Hose had a ground rule double to begin the bottom of the ninth. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third and a walk had runners on the corners. A fielding error allowed a run to score and tie the game at 4-4. A sacrifice fly with the bases loaded gave the Blue Hose a 5-4 win.
 
David Yourke started for Wofford and went two innings with two runs allowed on two hits, along with three strikeouts. Matt Ellmyer allowed one hit and had one strikeout in an inning. Chandler Woolridge gave up one hit. Rasesh Pandya did not allow a hit with two strikeouts in an inning. Anthony Garcia worked four innings with one run allowed on two hits and two strikeouts. Reece Maniscalco (1-1) allowed two runs on a hit and a walk. Jake Hershman issued one walk in a third of an inning.
 
Presbyterian starter Jackson Dean threw four innings with one run allowed on seven hits, while striking out one. Greyson Stoneking did not allow a hit in two innings. Matt Norton gave up two runs on two walks in a third of an inning. Patrick McNamara allowed one hit in two-thirds of an inning. Austin Paradis (1-0) threw the final two innings with one run allowed on one hit and a strikeout.
 
The Terriers will begin Southern Conference play on Friday at 6:00 p.m. against Mercer at Russell C. King Field. The game can be seen on ESPN3.
