MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Wofford women's lacrosse team traveled to Central Michigan on Friday for its second Southern Conference matchup of the season, falling to the Chippewas 19-9.
Hannah Mutch,
Ally Furnari and
JoJo Franklin each score two goals in the contest, while
Sophie Smith scored a goal and had an assist. Goalkeeper
Kelsey Thompson totaled 13 saves while Furnari picked up a team-high three ground balls. As a team, Wofford totaled 21 shots with 14 being on goal while winning 13 draw controls and totaling 13 ground balls.Â
Central Michigan would strike under two minutes into the game, eventually taking a 7-0 lead before Smith got fouled and converted a free position shot to get the Terriers on the board. Wofford would mount a rally, getting goals from
Hannah Wurzel and
Elisabeth Ralph to make the score 7-3. The Chippewas responded, scoring the next five goals to take an nine-goal advantage into the break.Â
Furnari netted the first goal of the second half, but Central Michigan scored the next three. Wofford's Mutch worked her way through the defense to stop the Chippewa run and make the score 15-5. Minutes later, Franklin was fouled and connected a free position shot to cut the deficit to nine.Â
After Central Michigan scored two goals,
Emily Elstun found Mutch for her second goal of the contest that made the score 17-7. The two sides proceeded to trade goals before Furnari scored a free position goal to make the score 19-8.
The loss drops Wofford to 2-11 on the season and 0-2 in SoCon play. Wofford will have a chance to rebound on Sunday, facing SoCon foe Detroit Mercy at 12 p.m.Â
