ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 8-4 by Winthrop on Tuesday night at Winthrop Ballpark. The Terriers scored the first two runs before the Eagles plated six runs in the fourth inning to take the lead. Both teams scored twice in the eighth inning for the final margin.

Wofford is 23-16 on the season and Winthrop is 21-15 this year. The Terriers were held to six hits in the game by six different players.
Brett Rodriguez scored two runs. Hunter Lipscomb led the Eagles with two hits and three RBIs.

Brett Rodriguez was hit on the first pitch of the game and he stole second base.
Hudson Byorick walked and the runners moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. A ground out by
John Dempsey scored Rodriguez for a 1-0 lead. The Eagles were retired in order in the bottom of the first inning.
Alec Cargin doubled with one out in the top of the second but was stranded at third base. Winthrop was retired in order to end the second inning.

To lead off the third inning,
Brett Rodriguez walked. After the Eagles turned a double play,
Lawson Hill hit a double and stole third base. He scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead. The Eagles went in order in the bottom of the third and Wofford was retired in order in the top of the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fourth with one out, an Eagle walked and went to second on a wild pitch. An RBI double made it a 2-1 game. A single plated a run to tie the game and a double with two outs gave Winthrop a 3-2 lead. A pair of RBI singles and a balk plated runs for a 6-2 advantage for the Eagles at the end of the fourth inning. Â

Wofford was retired in order in the top of the fifth inning and the Eagles stranded one after a single. Both teams went in order in the sixth inning. With two outs in the top of the seventh,
Ethan Cornelius doubled but was unable to advance. Winthrop went in order to end the seventh inning.
Mike Brown and
Brett Rodriguez singled to lead off the eighth inning. A double steal moved them into scoring position. Back-to-back sacrifice flies by
Nolen Hester and
Lawson Hill cut the lead to 6-4. In the bottom of the eight, a lead-off walk was followed by a home run by Hunter Lipscomb for an 8-4 advantage.
Josh Congdon was hit by a pitch with two outs in the top of the ninth inning. A foul out ended the game.

Matt Ellmyer (2-3) started for the Terriers and went 3.2 innings with six runs allowed on five hits, along with one strikeout.
Jake Dippold worked 3.1 innings with two runs allowed on two hits.
Ty Reginelli did not allow a hit in an inning on the mound.

Winthrop starter Mason Groves went two innings with one run allowed on one hit. Bryan Petta allowed one run on one hit in an inning. Dalton Whitaker (1-1) threw three innings and did not allow a hit with two strikeouts. Braxton Foley allowed one hit in an inning. Jason Crumley gave up two runs on three hits in an inning and Colton Rendon had one strikeout in an inning.
