Wofford earns first home victory in program history

Terriers score program-best 23 goals in shutout over Howard

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford lacrosse team had a record night on Thursday, scoring a program-high 23 goals in a shutout win over Howard University, picking up the first home victory in school history.

The victory, which is Wofford's third of the season, gives the team one more win than it had in 2018, improving to 2-0 all-time against Howard. Entering Thursday, Wofford had scored 18 goals twice, but eclipsed that mark by five to set a new program record. The 23-goal margin is another program record, while the shutout is the first of its kind for the Terriers.

"To be a part of the first home win in program history as well the first shutout in program history is something truly special," said Wofford interim head coach Elizabeth Ellis. "It's a great day to be a Terrier."

As a team, the Terriers registered 30 shots on goal, won 16 draw controls, picked up 14 ground balls, and were a perfect 6-for-6 on clear attempts. Every field player scored on Thursday, as Ally Furnari and Elisabeth Ralph each registered a hat trick in the dominant win.

"Today's win was genuinely a team effort," Ellis said. "It's so great to see everything come together and all our players' hard work pay off."

Wofford wasted little time getting on the board, as Emily Elstun found Sophie Smith who put the Terriers up 1-0. The next seven goals were all scored by different players, with Wofford taking a commanding 8-0 lead just 10 minutes into the contest.

Elisabeth Ralph scored back-to-back goals before a pair of free position goals from Furnari and Hannah Wurzel made the score 12-0. The Terriers added three more before the break, capped off by Erin McGovern's first-career score which sent the teams to half with the score 15-0.

Senior defender Monica Branch opened up the second half by netting her first goal of the season and third for her Wofford career. Emma Seif, Maeve Moran and Alexandra Foulke would get in on the action, each scoring their first goal of the season, with Seif registering her first-career goal less than five minutes into the period.

Furnari closed the game out with her team-leading 23rd goal of the season as the Terriers cruised to victory.

With the win, Wofford improves to 3-12 on the season and will host Delaware State on Saturday at noon. The game, which will be senior day for the Terriers, will be streamed on the SoCon Digital Network.
