Baseball Defeated At Wright State

DAYTON, OHIO – On Tuesday afternoon, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 11-4 by Wright State at Nischwitz Stadium. The Raiders scored three runs in the first inning and broke the game open with six runs in the fourth inning. The Terriers scored twice in the fifth and added two runs in the ninth for the final margin.
 
Wofford is 19-12 on the season and Wright State is 19-8 overall. The Terriers were led by Brett Rodriguez with two of the team's five hits. J.D. Orr and Zach Weatherford each had three hits for the Raiders and Alex Alders had four RBIs.
 
The Terriers left one runner on base in the top of the first inning after Lawson Hill walked. With one out in the bottom of the first, the Raiders had a double and an RBI single for a 1-0 lead. After a walk, a double plated two runs for a 3-0 advantage. Wofford had the bases loaded in the top of the second after a single from John Dempsey, a walk by Matty Brown and a single by Alec Cargin, but a double play ended the scoring opportunity. The Raiders had one batter reach base in the bottom of the second but was caught stealing.
 
With one out in the top of the third, Brett Rodriguez singled. A double play ended the top half of the third. The Raiders had the bases loaded in the bottom of the third when a strike out ended the scoring chance. Wofford was retired in order in the top of the fourth inning. Wright State had a double to lead off their half of the fourth inning and with one out an RBI single made it a 4-0 game. With the bases loaded, a single to left field drove in two runs for a 6-0 lead. Another single had the bases loaded again when a fielder's choice plated a run. Two more RBI singles gave the Raiders a 9-0 lead before a ground out ended the fourth inning.
 
In the top of the fifth inning, Alec Cargin walked with one out and moved to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, a single by Andrew Orzel scored Cargin. Brett Rodriguez followed with a single and Orzel scored on a throwing error on the play to make it a 9-2 game. The Raiders had one runner reach base in the bottom of the fifth but was caught stealing second.
 
Hudson Byorick walked with one out in the top of the sixth inning, however the Raiders turned their third double play of the game to end the top half. A lead-off walk for Wright State was followed by a wild pitch. A single up the middle drove in the runner for a 10-2 lead. A single and walk loaded the bases before a fly ball ended the sixth inning. Wofford left one runner on base in the top of the seventh after a single by Matt Pagano and the Raiders were retired in order.
 
After Wofford was retired in order in the top of the eighth, the Raiders added a run on back-to-back doubles to start the bottom half. In the top of the ninth, the Terriers loaded the bases with walked to Nolen Hester and Brennan Dorighi, along with a hit by pitch to Josh Congdon. A fielder's choice by Matty Brown plated a run for an 11-3 score. A sacrifice fly by Ethan Cornelius made it 11-4 before a ground ball ended the game.
 
Jake Zoller (0-1) started for Wofford and worked one inning with three runs allowed on three hits, along with one strikeout. Matt Ellmyer gave up six runs on seven hits with two strikeouts in 2.2 innings. Ty Reginelli went 2.1 innings and allowed one run on three hits, while striking out one. Jake Dippold threw two innings with one run allowed on two hits.  
 
Wright State starter Riley Perlich (2-0) went four innings without allowing a run on three hits and three strikeouts. Mitch Gremling threw two innings with two runs allowed on two hits. Bradley Deboutte went an inning with one hit allowed and a strikeout. Wes Earles threw a clean inning. Jorge Lozano gave up two runs on three walks in two-thirds of an inning and Tyler Luneke recorded the final out.
 
The Terriers will return to Southern Conference play at Western Carolina on Friday night to begin a three-game series against the Catamounts in Cullowhee.
