Baseball Falls 7-3 To Winthrop

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Wednesday night, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 7-33 by Winthrop at Russell C. King Field.  With the game tied at two after five innings, the Eagles scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning for a 6-2 lead. Wofford got one run back in the seventh inning and Winthrop added a run in the ninth for the final margin.  
 
Wofford is 26-20 overall and Winthrop is 25-16 on the season. The Eagles won both games in the series this season. The Terriers had nine hits in the game, with two each by Mike Brown and John Dempsey. Brandon Fite led the Eagles with three hits and two RBIs.
 
The Eagles were retired in order in the top of the first inning and the Terriers had a single by Brett Rodriguez. In the second inning, Winthrop stranded one runner in the top half after an error. With one out in the bottom half, John Dempsey and Colin Davis had infield singles. Dempsey was out on a double steal attempt and a fly ball ended the inning. In the top of the third inning, Winthrop led off with a single. A ground out and wild pitch advanced the runner to third base, while another ground out plated the run for a 1-0 lead.
 
Wofford opened the bottom of the third inning with a walk and a fielder's choice. A pick-off was followed by a single from Mike Brown. After a walk by Brett Rodriguez, a foul out ended the third inning. The Eagles had a double to lead off the fourth inning and with two outs an RBI single made it a 2-0 game. They added another single before a strikeout ended the top half. Wofford had a single in the bottom of the fourth and the Eagles left one on base in the top of the fifth after an error.
 
Nolen Hester led off the bottom of the fifth with a double and with one out a single by Mike Brown had runners on the corners. A wild pitch allowed Hester to score for a 2-1 game. With two outs, a single by Hudson Byorick drove in Brown to tie the game at 2-2. Alec Cargin walked but two runners were left one base.
 
In the top of the sixth inning, the Eagles loaded the bases on a walk, single and bunt single. A single drove in two runs for a 4-2 advantage. With one out a single added a run and a sacrifice fly made it 6-2. Wofford was retired in order to end the sixth inning. Winthrop had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the seventh inning but a strikeout ended the scoring chance.
 
Reed Massey tripled to left center to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning. Mike Brown followed with a walk and with two outs Alec Cargin walked to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Massey for a 6-3 game, but two runners were stranded. The Eagles had a single in the top of the eighth, but the runner was caught stealing. Wofford went in order to end the eighth inning. In the top of the ninth inning, the Eagles led off with a walk and the runner stole second. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third and a sacrifice fly made it 7-3. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Brett Rodriguez walked and stole second base. A fly ball ended the game.
 
Matt Ellmyer started for Wofford and went three innings with one run allowed on one hit, along with one strikeout. Jake Hershman (1-3) threw three innings and allowed five runs on seven hits, while striking out two. Ty Reginelli went two innings with two hits allowed and a strikeout. Rasesh Pandya closed the game and allowed one run in an inning.  
 
Winthrop starter Jason Crumley threw two innings with three hits allowed. Braxton Foley went an inning with one hit allowed. Mason Groves went 1.2 innings with two runs allowed on four hits and a strikeout. Bryan Petta (2-0) threw 1.1 innings and did not allow a hit. Turner Scruggs gave up one run on one hit. Macklin Ohs added an inning on the mound with one strikeout. Dalton Whitaker had one strikeout in an inning. Colton Rendon threw the ninth and did not allow a hit.
 
Wofford will travel to The Citadel for a three-game series beginning on Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
