GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford College baseball team opened a three-game series against UNCG with a 1-0 loss on Thursday night at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Spartans scored the lone run of the game in the fourth inning.

Wofford is 31-23 on the season and 12-9 in the Southern Conference. UNCG is 33-16 overall and 14-8 in league play. The Terriers had one hit in the game and were shutout for the first time this season. UNCG had seven hits, including three by Caleb Webster. Â

In the top of the first inning the Terriers were retired in order. The Spartans lead-off batter reached on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. On a single to right field the runner was thrown out at home for the second out and a strikeout ended the inning. After Wofford was retired in order in the top of the second inning, UNCG had a double with two outs in the bottom half before a ground out stranded the runner.

Both teams were retired in order in the third inning, with
Hayes Heinecke striking out the side in the bottom half.
Mike Brown led off the fourth inning by reaching on an error and
Brett Rodriguez singled to give Wofford runners on the corners. Rodriguez stole second base, but both were stranded. The Spartans singled to begin their half of the fourth and with one out a double put runners in scoring position. On a fielder's choice, the lead runner was out trying to score. A single with two outs gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead before a ground out ended the inning. Both teams were again retired in order in the fifth inning. Â

Wofford was retired in order in the top of the sixth inning and with two outs the Spartans had a batter reach on a walk. A strikeout ended the inning for UNCG. The Terriers went in order in the top of the seventh. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, the Spartans had an infield single before a ground out ended the frame. Wofford had two outs in the top of the eighth inning when
Andrew Orzel walked, ending a stretch of 14 straight batters retired. A fly ball ended the top half. The Spartans had a single with one out in the bottom of the eighth before a pair of strikeouts ended the inning. Wofford was retired in order to end the game.

Hayes Heinecke (9-2) started for the Terriers and went seven innings with one run allowed on six hits, along with eight strikeouts.
Austin Higginbotham threw an inning with two strikeouts and one hit allowed.

UNCG starter Austin Koehn (4-2) went seven innings with one hit allowed and six strikeouts. Chad Sykes earned his 11
th save of the season by going the final two innings without allowing a hit and recording two strikeouts. Â

The Terriers and Spartans will continue the series on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
