Women’s Soccer defeats South Carolina State in Season Opener

SPARTANBURG, S.C.- The Wofford women's soccer team notched their first win of the 2019 season on Friday after defeating the visiting South Carolina State Bulldogs. The Terriers took control of the match within the first 9 minutes of play and never looked back, cruising to a 5-1 win. With the victory, Emily Grant tallied her first win as head coach.

Wofford (1-0) was in total control during the first half of play, scoring two goals before into heading into the locker room at halftime. The Terriers jumped out to an early lead in the eighth minute of the contest as Erin Wolfe found her first goal of the season from the help of Katie Gilligan. Later in the half, Gilligan would score herself as the sophomore netted her first goal of the year off an assist from Maggie Adcock. Wofford was stellar on defense as well, holding the Bulldogs to just two shots on goal during the first half.

Following a successful start, the Terriers would increase their lead in the second half as Gilligan scored her second goal of the match on a penalty kick in the 64th minute, pushing the score to 3-0 in favor of Wofford. Despite a South Carolina State goal just two minutes later, the Terriers did not encounter any major problems the rest of the way. Coming off the bench, Cameryn Burke would join the action as the redshirt-junior found the back of the net for this first time this season in the 80th minute. As the match was drawing to a close, Savannah Vathy put away the Bulldogs for good off of an assist from Eva Dailey in the 88th minute.

After finishing second on the team in goals in 2018, Gilligan picked up right where she left off, pacing the Terrier attack with two goals. It would also mark a historic night for Burke as her goal in the 80th minute marked the first of her collegiate career. Additionally, goalkeeper Maria Mon picked up her first win of the season and third overall victory at Snyder Field. Wofford enjoyed an excellent night on offense as seven different Terriers were able to record a shot, outshooting the Bulldogs 8-7 along the way.

The Terriers will resume play on Sunday, August 25 when they hit the road to take on Charleston Southern at 2:00 pm. The next home game is scheduled for Sunday, September 8 against Radford.
