CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Wofford women's soccer team dropped to 1-1 on the season after losing to Charleston Southern 3-0, on Sunday at CSU Soccer Field. After a scoreless first half from both teams, the Terriers could not seem to find any momentum on offense as the Buccaneers notched three goals in the second half to secure the home victory.
Playing in their first regular season road match of the season, the Terriers tallied two shots from juniors
Paige Miller and
Eva Dailey in the first 15 minutes of the contest, but could not capitalize on offense. Despite being outshot 9-2 by the Buccaneers, sophomore goalkeeper
Maria Mon was able record two saves and deny the Charleston Southern attack through the first half, sending the teams into the locker room knotted at zero.
The second half proved to be more in favor of the Buccaneers as they outshot Wofford 12-4.
Maggie Adcock and
Allie Cardew each attempted a shot to score in the first ten minutes of the second half, but Charleston Southern's first goal of the match came in the 70
th minute off the foot of Zari Hayes as the Buccaneers took their first lead of the game, 1-0. Just four minutes later, the Buccaneers would tack on another goal, pushing the score to 2-0 after Kylie Doster found the back of the net on assists from Kayla Reese and Kat Klingensmith. Dailey was able to record her second shot of the contest following this goal, but the Terrier attack would be short lived as Charleston Southern extended their lead to 3-0 on a penalty kick goal from Grace Gompers in the 82
nd minute. Junior
Dani Segovia would join in on Wofford's attempt at a comeback by tallying her lone shot in the 84
th minute, but the Terriers never found a groove as they were defeated in regulation by a final score of 3-0.
Dailey led the Terriers with two shots on the day, followed by a single shot from Cardew, Segovia, Miller, and freshman
McKenzie Guest. Despite the loss, Mon recorded a season-high five saves on the day.
Wofford will have the next five days off before they travel to Rock Hill on Saturday, August 31 to face off against the Winthrop Eagles. The Terriers next home match will be on Sunday, September 8 when they host Radford.
