Women’s Soccer edges Winthrop, 3-2, for first road victory

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer (2-1-0) team picked up their second victory of the young season on Saturday night after defeating Winthrop on the road, 3-2. Despite an early goal from the Eagles, Wofford stayed consistent with a balanced offensive attack as nine different Terriers recorded shots during the contest. This persistence would pay off as the Terriers were able to survive a late comeback attempt from Winthrop to secure the win.

In the first half, Wofford came out looking to strike first as junior Maggie Adcock notched her lone shot of the match at the 1:53 mark. Despite a goal from Winthrop's Clara Conboy in the 11th minute, sophomore Katie Gilligan evened the score at 1 when she scored on an assist from Lucy Johnson in the 27th minute. As the half was coming to a close, junior Paige Miller tallied her first goal of the season as she found the back of the net to put the Terriers ahead, 2-1, with just three seconds remaining on the clock.

Having found some momentum heading into the locker room, Gilligan scored again in the 66th minute to record her second goal of the match and fourth overall on the season, extending the Terrier lead to 3-1. With the goal, the sophomore from Kent, England has now scored 2 goals in two of the first three matches for Wofford. However, Winthrop would not quit as a Natalie Royaards goal in the 78th minute brought the Eagles to within one goal of the Terriers. Looking to close out their first road win of the year, Wofford was able to protect their goal in the final ten minutes and pick up their second victory of the season, 3-2, at Eagle Field.

For the Terriers, Gilligan paced the offense with three shots and two goals, followed by two shots a piece from Eva Dailey and Allie Cardew. Miller, who also scored for Wofford in the win, attempted one shot along with Adcock, Johnson, Abigail McKenzie, Lexi Reichenbach and Savannah Vathy. In goal, sophomore Maria Mon also helped deny the Eagles by tallying seven saves en route to her second win of the season.

The Terriers will resume play on Friday, September 6 when they travel to Clinton, S.C. to face off against Presbyterian College at 7:00 pm. Wofford's next home match is scheduled for Sunday, September 8 at 1:00 pm when they host Radford.
