Women’s Soccer Drops Match at Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C. - The Wofford women's soccer team (3-5-0) fell to Appalachian State, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex. Despite holding their opponents scoreless in the first half, the Terriers fell victim to three goals in the second half as the Mountaineers secured the victory on their home pitch.

Appalachian State would come out firing, recording their first shot of the match in the 13th minute. Wofford would counter with shots from sophomore Karen Majewksi and redshirt junior Cameryn Burke as the Terriers aimed to get on the board, but both teams would be held scoreless through the first half. The Mountaineers were solid on the defensive end, holding Wofford to just two shots before halftime.

In the second half, junior Erin Wolfe tallied two shots on goal within the first ten minutes, but was ultimately denied as Appalachian State's goalkeeper, Kerry Eagleston, saved both shots. The Mountaineers would go on to score first in the 61st minute on a goal from Molly Niewald. Just six minutes later, they would extend their lead to 2-0 as Mary Perkins notched her third goal of the season. Majewski would attempt to close the gap with another shot in the 71st minute, but Eagleston turned away the Terrier attack once again. As the match was winding down, Appalachian State would grow their lead to 3-0 as Tess Cairney was able to find the back of the net. This score would hold as the Mountaineers went on to secure their third victory of the year.

Overall, Majewski paced Wofford's offense with three total shots. She was followed by Wolfe, who recorded two shots on goal, as well as a shot from Burke. Unfortunately, the Terriers were outshot 19-6 in the match.

Wofford will resume play on Friday, September 27 when they travel to Tennessee to take on Chattanooga. This match, which is scheduled to begin at 7:00 pm, will mark the first Southern Conference contest for the Terriers this season.
