Women’s Soccer Falls to Radford, 2-1

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team (3-2-0) was defeated by the visiting Radford Highlanders, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Snyder Field. Despite the back and forth action between the two teams, the Terriers could not find the equalizer in the closing minutes of the game as their final offensive attack fell just short.

The Highlanders came out firing, recording five shots within the first ten minutes of the match. Looking to counter with offense of their own, junior Eva Dailey notched her first shot of the day in the opening minutes as Wofford attempted to strike first on their home pitch. Senior Allie Cardew would join the action as she tallied her lone shot of the day in the 34th minute, but Radford responded with a goal in the 43rd minute off the foot of Lily McLane. Sophomore Karen Majewski was able to fire off one more shot for the Terriers before the end of the first half, but Wofford would trail, 1-0, heading into the locker room.

In the second half, Dailey came out of the break aiming to tie the match as she recorded her second shot of the day in the 49th minute. Unfortunately, the junior from Mount Pleasant could not find the back of the net. Radford would then extend their lead to 2-0 when Brianna Oliver scored her second goal of the season in the 61st minute. Trying to gain momentum, the Terriers continued to attack the opposing goal with force. This pressure would turn into success for Wofford as sophomore Katie Gilligan, the Southern Conference's current leader in goals and total points, scored her 5th goal of the season at the 79:18 mark. This brought the Terriers to within one goal of the Highlanders, but this would be all that would come for the Wofford offense during the rest of the match as Radford won by a final score of 2-1.

Despite the loss, the Terrier offense showed some promise with 13 total shots (7 on goal) from nine different players. Dailey paced the Wofford attacks with 3 total shots, followed by two each from Majewski and Paige Miller. Gilligan, Cardew, Erin Wolfe, Savannah Vathy, Lexi Reichenbach and Abigail Albritton also each recorded a shot of their own.

The Terriers will resume play this upcoming Friday, September 13 when they travel to USC Upstate for a road match at 7:00 pm. Wofford's next home game is scheduled for October 4 at 7:00 pm against VMI.
