SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College football team was back on the practice fields on a sunny Saturday morning to complete the 15 days of fall practice permitted by the NCAA.
The team worked for approximately 90 minutes. In the first team period,
Ryan Lovelace and
Nathan Walker had first down runs.
Landon Parker added a first down reception, while
Jahem Hazel came up with an interception.
In the final team period, the offense had 1:50 left on the clock to begin. A 35-yard catch by R.J. Khayo from
Peyton Derrick opened the drive. A sack by
John Beckley on second down was followed by a short run to bring up fourth-and-one.
Corey Cooper caught a three-yard pass to give the offense a first down. Derrick then found Cooper in the corner of the endzone for a 20-yard touchdown reception.
Walker Gliarmis hit the point after to end the practice.
"I think the most important thing is that we have really come together as a football program," said head coach
Josh Conklin. "I think it has been really tough mentally and emotionally on these guys to not be able to play this fall. Being out here this fall they have gotten better every single day and I appreciate their effort and what they have been able to accomplish. I think when we leave here, we have a solid football team heading into the spring.
"The biggest thing this fall was the ability to come together," continued Conklin. "We lost a lot of guys on offense and we are coming together on defense. We have added young guys that are going to play this spring and give us some valuable reps. I would say chemistry is the most important. I think from a schematic and fundamental technique that is what you want to use these opportunities for. We have taken advantage of every single practice. I have been excited about how these guys have worked and come together and handled the adversity. They are excited about the break and coming back with a season on the horizon."
Wofford, the back-to-back-to-back Southern Conference Champions, return a total of eleven starters from 2019. There are two starters back on offense, along with seven on defense and two specialists. Last season the Terriers were 8-4 overall and 7-1 in the league. They advanced to the NCAA FCS Playoffs for the fourth straight season.
The Terriers will return to campus in early January to begin a segment of 29 practices to prepare for the opening game on Saturday, February 20, against Mercer at Gibbs Stadium.
