SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College football team was back on the practice fields on Saturday morning to complete the first three weeks of fall practice. It marked the ninth day on the fields, with the team having six more available practice dates.
The team worked for approximately two hours on Saturday. In skelly,
Cario Googer had an interception and
Landon Parker and
Alec Holt both had big catches. After a special teams segment focused on punts, the practice ended with two live series.
"I think we are doing a really good job of taking advantage of the opportunities we have been given," said head coach
Josh Conklin. "Not having the opportunity to play games this fall the guys have really responded to work through. We have had a lot of time to get better this fall and I am excited where we are at. With six practices left, we have really installed three times through fall and now we are going to start to look at the opponents we have coming up. We have broken down most of them, including games played this fall, and will start giving our guys some different looks from different teams and split our time 50-50 on us and our opponents this spring."
The practice ended with two drives beginning at the three-yard line.
Peyton Derrick was a quarterback on the first drive and had a first down run, which was followed by a first down run by
Jamari Broussard.
Landon Parker added a first down reception and
Alec Holt had a 15-yard catch for a first down. The drive ended with a 40-yard touchdown run by Derrick and
Dawson Henis added the point after.
Jimmy Weirick took over at quarter back on the second drive and
Nathan Walker had a first down run. Donovan Anderson had a fumble recovery to end the drive and the practice.
"The best thing about those final two drives was situationally coming out I think the offense made some big plays and the defense made big plays. You are seeing some good things on both sides of the ball and as a head coach that is what you want to see. You see some young guys as freshmen making plays and that has been really good."
Wofford, the back-to-back-to-back Southern Conference Champions, return a total of eleven starters from 2019. There are two starters back on offense, along with seven on defense and two specialists. Last season the Terriers were 8-4 overall and 7-1 in the league. They advanced to the NCAA FCS Playoffs for the fourth straight season.
The Terriers will return to the field on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for the next two weeks to complete the 15-day practice segment. Practices are currently closed to the public, as the Wofford campus is not open to visitors at this time.
