Baseball Walks-Off Binghamton 5-4

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A walk-off single by Colin Davis gave the Wofford College baseball team a 5-4 win over Binghamton at Russell C. King Field on Sunday afternoon. The Terriers jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first inning, but the Bearcats scored in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the contest at 4-4. Neither team scored in the seventh or eighth innings. Binghamton left one runner on base in the top of the ninth. With a runner on third and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, a single to left field by Davis ended the game.   
 
Wofford opens the season at 3-0, while Binghamton is 0-3 after the series sweep. Both teams had ten hits in the contest and two errors. The Terriers were led by Colin Davis with three hits and two RBIs, while Lawson Hill added three hits. T.J. Wegmann led the Bearcats with three hits – one of which was a home run – and three RBIs.
 
The Bearcats opened the game with a double and with two outs an RBI single gave them a 1-0 lead. Brett Rodriguez led off the bottom of the first with a walk and he stole second base. A single by Hudson Byorick gave Wofford runners on the corners and a fielder's choice by John Dempsey tied the game at 1-1. A double by Colin Davis drove in a run for a 2-1 advantage. A ground out by Alec Cargin and an RBI single by Andrew Orzel pushed the lead to 4-1. Shane Lussier walked and then a balk moved the runners into scoring position. Mike Brown walked to load the bases before a ground out ended the first frame.
 
Binghamton was retired in order in the top of the second inning. Hudson Byorick singled to open the bottom of the second, but the Bearcats then turned a double play. Lawson Hill and Colin Davis singled but were left on base. In the third inning, Binghamton left one runner on base and Wofford had one batter reach on a walk. The Bearcats were retired in order in the top of the fourth inning.
 
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, John Dempsey and Lawson Hill walked but were stranded. The Bearcats led off the fifth with a double and T.J. Wegmann followed with a home run to cut the lead to 4-3. They added a double in the inning but the runner was left at second. Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the fifth inning. In the top of the sixth, the Bearcats had runners on the corners after a pair of Wofford errors when a single tied the game at 4-4. The Terriers were retired in order to end the sixth inning.
 
In the top of the seventh with one out, the Bearcats had a single and a walk. A fly ball and strikeout ended the top half. Lawson Hill walked with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but was stranded at second base. Binghamton singled to lead off the eighth inning and the runner advanced on a sacrifice bunt. A single gave the Bearcats runners on the corners with one out. The Terriers turned a 4-6-3 double play to end the top of the frame.
 
Andrew Orzel led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt. He was left on third base after a ground out ended the inning. The Bearcats opened the ninth with a single and the runner stole second. A fly ball and strikeout were followed by a fly ball to end the top half. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Lawson Hill singled up the middle. Trey Yunger came in as a pinch runner and on a failed pickoff attempt moved to third base. With two outs, Colin Davis singled to left field to drive in Yunger for the 5-4 win.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Elliot Carney went two-thirds of an inning with one run allowed on two hits. Josh Vitus worked 3.1 innings with two runs allowed on two hits and a pair of strikeouts in his first career appearance. Dalton Rhadans (1-0) threw 5.0 innings with one run allowed on six hits and four strikeouts.
 
Jack Collins started for Binghamton and worked 3.0 innings with four runs allowed on seven hits. Ryan Bryggman went four innings without allowing a hit and two strikeouts. Dylan Gearhart (0-1) threw 1.2 innings with one run allowed on three hits, along with three strikeouts.
 
Wofford will host UNC Asheville on Wednesday, February 19 at 6:00 p.m.
