Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A walk-off sacrifice fly by
Hudson Byorick gave the Wofford College baseball team an 8-7 victory over UNC Asheville at Russell C. King Field on Wednesday night. The Bulldogs scored five runs in the first inning and the Terriers scored one run in the fourth inning and two runs in the sixth inning. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Wofford plated four runs for a 7-5 lead. The Bulldogs answered with two runs in the top of the eighth to tie the game at 7-7. In the bottom of the ninth with
Brett Rodriguez at third base, a sacrifice fly by Byorick won the game.
Wofford opens the season at 4-0, while UNC Asheville is 0-4. The Terriers had ten hits in the game, including two each by
Lawson Hill,
Colin Davis,
Andrew Orzel and
Matty Brown.
Hudson Byorick had three RBIs for Wofford. The Bulldogs had 13 hits, led by Domonic Freeberger with three. M.J. Lucas drove in three runs.
The Bulldogs had a double with one out and then had an RBI double with two outs for a 1-0 lead. Back-to-back singles added a run for a 2-0 advantage. A walk loaded the bases and then a double cleared them for a 5-0 score. Wofford left one runner on base to end the first inning. In the top of the second inning the Bulldogs added a single, but stranded the runner. The Terriers had two runners left on base in the bottom of the second after
Andrew Orzel walked and
Matty Brown singled. In the top of the third the Bulldogs led off with a single, but the runner was left on third base after a pair of strikeouts.
After Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the third inning, the Bulldogs left two runners on base in the top of the fourth after a walk and single.
Lawson Hill led off the bottom of the fourth with a single.
Colin Davis followed with a single, but Hill was out at third on the play. With two outs, a single by
Andrew Orzel scored Davis to make it a 5-1 game.
Matty Brown added a single before fielder's choice ended the frame.
In the top of the fifth inning the Bulldogs left one runner on base after a batter reached on an error. Wofford stranded two runners in the bottom of the fifth after a hit by pitch and walk. The Bulldogs went in order in the top of the sixth inning.
Alec Cargin led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk and he then stole second base.
Matty Brown and
Nolen Hester added walks with one out. A walk to
Brett Rodriguez with the bases loaded plated a run for a 5-2 score.
Hudson Byorick had a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 5-3 before a ground out ended the inning.
A single and hit by pitch led off the top of the seventh for the Bulldogs. A fly ball double play and a second fly ball sent the game to the seventh inning stretch.
Lawson Hill singled through the right side to open the bottom of the seventh.
Colin Davis bunted and a throwing error led to Davis reaching second base and Hill moved to third base. An RBI infield single by
Alec Cargin made it a 5-4 game with runners on the corners and no outs.
Andrew Orzel reached on a bunt single that tied the score at 5-5.
Matty Brown bunted and an error on the play allowed a run to score and Wofford took a 6-5 advantage.
With the bases loaded after
Nolen Hester was hit by a pitch, a single by
Hudson Byorick plated a run for a 7-5 lead. A strikeout and ground out ended the seventh inning with the bases still loaded for the Terriers.
In the top of the eighth, a single was followed by an error. An RBI single made it a one run game at 7-6 and then a single loaded the bases. With two outs, a walk plated a run to tie the game at 7-7. A fly ball then ended the top half. Wofford had two outs in the bottom of the eighth when
Andrew Orzel walked and stole second. A strikeout ended the inning for the Terriers. In the top of the ninth, the Bulldogs led off with a single. After a strikeout, the runner was caught stealing second. Another strikeout ended the top of the inning.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth,
Brett Rodriguez walked. He then stole second base and third base. A fly ball to right field by
Hudson Byorick scored Rodriguez for the 8-7 victory.
Wofford starting pitcher
Scottie Wallace went two innings with five runs allowed on six hits, along with two strikeouts.
Jake Hershman threw four scoreless innings with three hits allowed and four strikeouts.
Rasesh Pandya (1-0) went the final three innings with two runs allowed on four hits and three strikeouts.
Blake Little started for UNC Asheville and went four innings with one run allowed on five hits while striking out three. Trey Jernigan threw 1.1 innings with two runs allowed. Ethan Tressler walked two batters. J.P. Perez gave up three runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning. Cole Harris (0-1) worked 2.2 innings with two runs allowed on two hits, along with three strikeouts.
Wofford will host Manhattan on Friday night at 6:00 p.m., followed by a Saturday doubleheader at King Field against Brown beginning at 2:00 p.m.
