Baseball Earns 10-2 Win Over La Salle

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Saturday afternoon, the Wofford College baseball team defeated La Salle 10-2 at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers scored three runs in the fourth inning and added four runs in the fifth on the way to picking up the victory.
 
Wofford is now 12-3 on the season, while La Salle is 4-8 overall. The Terriers had 12 hits in the game, including two each by Lawson Hill, Colin Davis and Matty Brown. Hayes Heinecke struck out seven batters in six innings for the win. The Explorers had nine hits, including four for extra bases, but could only score two runs.
 
Through the first three innings, the Explorers had a pair of doubles and the Terriers were held to a single. With two outs in the fourth inning, the Explorers added a single. Wofford had one out in the bottom of the fourth when a single by Lawson Hill was followed by a walk to Colin Davis. A single by Andrew Orzel had the bases loaded and a single through the right side by Josh Congdon drove in two runs. Trey Yunger had a sacrifice fly to give Wofford a 3-0 lead at the end of the fourth inning.
 
In the top of the fifth inning, La Salle had a double with one out but the runner did not advance. Mike Brown reached on an error in the bottom of the fifth and proceeded to steal second and third base. A double by Hudson Byorick scored Brown and then a double by Lawson Hill added a run for a 5-0 lead. Colin Davis cleared the fence in left field for a 7-0 lead with his third home run of the season.
 
The Explorers had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the sixth inning when a fielder's choice ended the scoring opportunity. With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Matty Brown tripled to center field. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Brown for an 8-0 advantage. Jack Cucinotta led off the top of the seventh with a solo home run. The Explorers added a single, but a double play and ground out sent the game to the seventh inning stretch.
 
Colin Davis double with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning and moved to third on a fly ball. Davis scored on a wild pitch to give the Terriers a 9-1 lead. The Explorers had two outs in the top of the eighth when two batters walked. A single drove in one run to cut the lead to 9-2 before a strikeout ended the half. Shane Lussier led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and with two outs he scored on a double by Ryan Galanie for a 10-2 advantage. The Explorers had one batter reach base in the top of the ninth before a fielder's choice ended the game.
 
Wofford starter Hayes Heinecke (3-1) went six scoreless innings with six hits allowed and seven strikeouts. O'Kelly McWilliams threw two innings with two runs allowed on three hits, along with two strikeouts. Matt Ellmyer completed the game without allowing a hit in the ninth inning.
 
Gabe Rappa (2-1) started for La Salle and threw 4.1 innings with seven runs allowed on seven hits. Dylan Maria worked 1.2 innings with one run allowed on two hits. Niko Jenkins threw an inning with one run allowed on a hit. Jackson Ray went the final inning with one run allowed on two hits and a pair of strikeouts.
 
Wofford will conclude the three-game weekend series against LaSalle on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Russell C. King Field.
