Baseball Sweeps Series With La Salle

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team completed a weekend sweep of La Salle with an 11-2 win on Sunday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. The Explorers scored in the first inning, but the Terriers tied the game in the second inning and then used five runs in the third inning to put the game out of reach.
 
Wofford is now 13-3 on the season, while La Salle is 4-9 overall. The Terriers had 11 hits in the game, with two each by Hudson Byorick, Colin Davis and Alec Cargin. Davis drove in four runs, while Lawson Hill added two RBIs. The Explorers were led by Ryan Guckin with two hits.
 
The Explorers opened the game with a double and bunt single for runners on the corners. A sacrifice fly made it a 1-0 game before the Terriers turned a double play to end the top half. Brett Rodriguez walked with one out in the bottom of the first but was stranded on second base. La Salle was retired in order in the top of the second inning and with one out in the bottom half Alec Cargin doubled off the wall in left field. With two outs, a double by Shane Lussier to right field scored Cargin to tie the game at 1-1.
 
In the top of the third inning, the Explorers stranded one runner. Mike Brown led off the bottom of the third with a single and Brett Rodriguez followed with a walk as both advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Hudson Byorick drove in Brown for a 2-1 lead. Lawson Hill added a run on a fielder's choice where Byorick was safe at third after getting in a rundown. Colin Davis then hit his fourth home run of the season to give Wofford a 6-1 advantage. The Explorers led off the fourth with a walk, but a double play and pop up ended the half.
 
With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Mike Brown and Brett Rodriguez drew back-to-back walks. Hudson Byorick was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but the Explorers turned a double play to end the inning. La Salle was retired in order in the top of the fifth inning. Colin Davis singled to lead off the bottom of the inning and scored on a double by Alec Cargin for a 7-1 score. After a sacrifice bunt, a single by John Dempsey drove in Cargin to make it an 8-1 game. The Explorers went in order in the top of the sixth.
 
Brett Rodriguez had an infield single to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning. He stole second base, which was his 85th career steal to set a new school record. Hudson Byorick walked and with Rodriguez on third after a wild pitch a ground out by Lawson Hill gave Wofford a 9-1 advantage. The Explorers had two singles in the top of the seventh, but a fielder's choice ended the top half. Andrew Orzel singled to open the bottom of the seventh and he moved to second on a balk, but was unable to score.
 
 In the top of the eighth, the Explorers had a batter reach on an error. A double play and ground out ended the top half. Brett Rodriguez walked to start the bottom of the eighth. A single by Hudson Byorick was misplayed in the outfield and Rodriguez scored, while Byorick ended up on third base. A sacrifice fly scored a run as Wofford had an 11-1 lead through eight innings. With one out in the top of the ninth, the Explorers had three straight hits that scored a run. A hit by pitch had the bases loaded with two outs before a ground out ended the game with an 11-2 final margin.
 
Wofford starter Cameron Bloodworth (1-0) went four innings in his first appearance of the season. He allowed one run on two hits, along with two strikeouts. Jake Hershman threw three scoreless innings with two hits allowed and three strikeouts. Jake Dippold did not allow a hit in an inning. Ethan Imbimbo gave up one run on three hits in the ninth inning.
 
Manny Corporan (1-2) started for La Salle and threw 3.1 innings with six runs allowed on five hits. Erik Janss worked 1.2 innings with two runs allowed on three hits. Matt Holt went an inning with one run allowed on one hit and a strikeout. Jordan Morales threw an inning with one hit allowed and two strikeouts. Colin Kennedy gave up two runs on one hit with two strikeouts in an inning.
 
Wofford will travel to Auburn for a contest on Wednesday night before returning home to begin a three-game series against Massachusetts on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
