Where Are They Now? Brigid Meadow

Brigid Meadow ‘98 is a member of the Post-Letterman’s Club and was the first Women's Soccer representative in the Wofford Hall of Fame. She received All-SoCon honors as a senior, when she led the Terriers to the SoCon Tournament championship game in just their first season of league play. The Hoover, Ala., native totaled a team-best 40 points that fall with 16 goals, including six game-winners, to go with eight assists. She scored a Wofford high 27 points on 11 goals and five assists in leading the Terriers to an 8-7 record in their debut campaign in 1994. Meadow currently resides in Vestavia Hills, AL, and teaches English 11 along with being the girls' head soccer coach at Vestavia Hills High School.

How did you decide to attend Wofford?

When I was deciding where to go to school, Wofford recruited me strongly to play soccer. I had never heard of Wofford before so I really did not consider it until I visited the campus and talked with some of the faculty and administrators. The feeling of family and genuine concern for students made me feel at home. My top two schools were Alabama and Auburn, both offered soccer scholarships as well, but I felt like I would be a part of a family at Wofford.

How did you balance schoolwork with practices and games?

At first, balancing school work and soccer and basketball was daunting. We had morning and afternoon workouts and/or meetings and travel days for games. I never had to study before college, so I really had to manage my time. My roommate my freshman year helped me manage my time and study for tests. My freshman and sophomore years, I was also on the basketball team. I couldn’t keep up the pace, so by my junior year, I was only playing soccer, which is the sport I was originally recruited for. I had to get up early and stay up late all the time to complete assignments or study. I really don’t know how I did it all.

My education at Wofford provided me with the knowledge to be successful in my current career...I truly wanted to learn for the sake of learning.

Could you tell us a little about what you are doing now and your career path?

I live in Vestavia Hills, AL, and teach English 11, and I am the head girls’ soccer coach at Vestavia Hills High School.

How did Wofford prepare you for your current job/career path?

My education at Wofford provided me with the knowledge to be successful in my current career. The professors really pushed me to excel and expected more of me academically than ever before. Dr. Richardson was the one English professor that made me feel like there was so much more for me to learn, and because of her, I truly wanted to learn for the sake of learning. She inspired me to be a stronger student, which led to my love for English. I changed majors in part from my experience in her classes.

What is your favorite Wofford Soccer memory?

I have a lot of great memories from playing soccer at Wofford, but my favorite memory was beating Georgia State at their place my junior year. I had scored already, but we were still tied going into OT. The defender was frustrated with me and kept fouling me every time I got the ball. Finally, we got a corner kick, and I knew if it was close to me, I would finish it. The corner was taken perfectly across the front of the goal near the penalty spot, and I went for it. After I headed it, I felt another impact to my right eye. I didn’t get to see the goal go in, but I heard the cheering. I wound up with 6 stitches to my eyebrow from the defender heading me in the eye, but it was so worth the win. My eyebrow still has a scar through it today, and I remember that moment every time I see it.

You received numerous accolades and awards during your time at Wofford, but the most prestigious would likely be the Hall of Fame induction in 2003. How would you describe that achievement?

Being inducted into the Wofford College Athletic Hall of Fame is an honor I did not even consider to be possible. I am truly honored to be a part of Wofford’s Athletic Hall of Fame. This achievement is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I am truly thankful to be a part of it.

What advice would you give to current/incoming student-athletes now?

My advice to incoming athletes is to take care of your body. I know there is so much going on with college life, but you need to find time to rest, sleep, and recover as well as eat properly in order to maintain a high level of athletic and academic performance. Also, enjoy your years at Wofford because they go by quick.
