GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team played a close game against the UNCG Spartans, but were unable to come away with the victory, falling by a 55-51 final. Shooting troubles from behind the arch continue to haunt the Terriers as they were only able to shoot 9% from deep.
Wofford drops its second straight conference game giving them a 4-2 SoCon record (8-5 overall), and UNCG goes to 4-11 (2-4 SoCon).
Jamari McDavid put the Terriers on the board with a baseline jumper to cut an early Spartan lead in half. McDavid then found
Lilly Hatton as she banked one off the window, and
Niyah Lutz saw McDavid alone for a left-handed layup to even the score at six. Out of the media timeout,
Helen Matthews drove the lane and caught the attention of three defenders before dumping it off to
MaryMartha Turner for a layup.
Alexis Tomlin then maneuvered her way by two as the shot clock was winding down to give Wofford its first lead of the game, 10-9. Matthews finished the quarter with a mid-range jumper to make it a 12-12 game at the end of the 1
st.
It was a scoreless 3:00 minutes before UNCG scored the first basket of the 2
nd quarter, en route to a 6-0 run before Wofford called a timeout. Tomlin was able to score the first points of the quarter for the Terriers after a good feed by
Lawren Cook. Cook put up a layup of her own to bring it to a one-score game on the next possession. Turner was able to find her stroke as she knocked down a 10-footer from Matthews, and Cook broke another scoreless drought for Wofford by hitting a 3-pointer from the corner, but the team trailed at halftime, 25-21.
Hatton made the first bucket of the 3
rd quarter with a strong layup after McDavid spotted her down low with a mismatch in the paint. After back-to-back offensive rebounds, Hatton made her way to the free-throw line and made both to make the score 29-25. Hatton continued her hot start in the 2
nd half with a corner jumper as her play was keeping Wofford within reach.
Jackie Carman got her first points of the game with a scooping layup, and Tomlin swished both from the charity stripe to make it a one-score game once again. Tomlin made another pair from the line as that made the score 34-33 going into the final frame.
Carman gave Wofford its first lead since the 1
st quarter after converting on a pass from
Alea Harris on the fast break. Harris scored a runner after the Terriers dominated the offensive glass giving them multiple second chance opportunities. Carman scored again on her patented left-handed layup, and made the "and-one" for a 40-36 lead.
Niyah Lutz scored her first points on a pair of free-throws, then Carman made two, via a technical foul, and put up a tough layup for a 46-36 advantage. UNCG responded with a 15-0 run, putting them up 51-46.
Annabelle Schultz made a deep 3-pointer with under 20 second to go, but time ran out on the Terriers as they fell 55-51.
Jackie Carman led all scorers with 13 points.
Lilly Hatton was a bucket away from a double-double, scoring eight and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Alexis Tomlin scored eight as well, and her and
Jamari McDavid each had six rebounds. Wofford grabbed 24 offensive rebounds and shot 86.7% (13-15) from the free-throw line.
"This was another road test that shows how tough the conference is. We took it to them at the start of the 4
th quarter, but you have to play a full 40 minutes if you want to win", said head coach
Jimmy Garrity. "We did a great job on the offensive glass, but we have to convert on that if we want to win…eight second chance points on 24 offensive rebounds isn't going to get it done. Saturday is going to be another tough game for us and it's going to take our best effort to win."
The Terriers will finish their trip in Greensboro on Saturday for a 1:00 pm tip.
