Terriers Bounce Back to Split Series with Spartans

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team took down the UNCG Spartans, at Greensboro, for the first time in five years, coming away with a 63-59 win. The Terriers played a strong game on the glass, collecting a total of 45 rebounds, 23 coming on the offensive side, and outscored the UNCG bench 25-9.

Wofford collects its second conference road win of the year, now going to 5-2 in the SoCon (9-5 overall). UNCG falls to 4-12 and 2-5 in conference play.

Lilly Hatton put the Terriers on the board with a 14-foot jumper and Alea Harris tied the game at four with a layup. Niyah Lutz put the team in front with a turnaround shot and then cashed in on a three for an early 9-6 lead. Hatton added two more after grabbing an offensive rebound for an 11-8 game with 4:05 left in the opening frame. Alexis Tomlin got her first points of the game after being found by Lawren Cook through the zone defense, and Helen Matthews popped a trey on the next possession forcing UNCG into a timeout. MaryMartha Turner was gifted a pass from Matthews on an out-of-bounds play for a layup, and Tomlin made a deep two from the corner to give Wofford a 20-11 advantage at the end of the 1st.

Hatton made a pair of free-throws after the Spartans scored the first five points of the quarter. Jamari McDavid was able to tack on another free-throw, but Wofford only held a two-point lead, 23-21, at the media timeout. Lutz made a tough fade-away as the shot clock hit zero and Tomlin finished two from the charity stripe to make it a 28-27 game. Tomlin scored the final five points for the Terriers, but UNCG had a small edge, 35-33 at halftime.

McDavid started the 2nd half scoring with a mid-range jumper, via the pass from Harris. Carman got on the scoresheet with two free-throws, and Cook broke a 0-9 shooting drought with a triple from the wing to tie the game 40-40. Matthews made a nice move for a reverse layup and Carman stole the inbound pass for the old fashioned three point play, giving Wofford a 45-43 lead to end the 3rd quarter.

Lutz hit a 3-pointer to begin the 4th quarter and McDavid bodied her defender in the paint and finished off with a layup to extend the lead. An elbow jumper from McDavid and a three from Hatton gave Wofford a seven-point lead. McDavid was having herself a strong quarter, scoring another layup as the Terriers had a 58-50 lead with under five minutes to play. With Wofford in the bonus, Matthews was sent to the line and made two, but it was still a tight contest. McDavid became the fourth Terriers to hit double figures after knocking down a free-throw. A huge rebound from Hatton allowed Matthews to go to the line once again, making both and sealing the win for Wofford.

Four Terriers ended the game in double figures; Alexis Tomlin had 11 and Niyah Lutz, Jamari McDavid, and Lilly Hatton all had 10. Hatton and Lutz shared a game-high seven rebounds and Helen Matthews had a game-high seven assists. Wofford outrebounded UNCG 45-24 and shot 16-24 from the free-throw line.

"That was a tough win…we had to grind that one out. We stayed composed and didn't let the situation get to us like Thursday", said coach Jimmy Garrity. "We rebounded the ball tremendously and because of that we were able to get a lot of second chance opportunities. I think the most important part is we played as a team down that final stretch and our energy gave us that final push to get the win."

Wofford returns to Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium for a series against Chattanooga on Thursday, February 4, and Saturday, February 6.
