BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Wofford Terriers women's soccer team could not overcome the defense of the Samford Bulldogs at Shauna Yelton Field Friday night, losing 3-1. Samford got on the board in the 9
th minute and added a second goal in the 24
th to go into halftime with a 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs made it 3-0 with a 58
th minute goal.
McKenzie Guest found the back of the net in the 86
th minute for the Terriers to prevent the shutout, but Wofford could not complete a comeback.
Samford opened the game firing on all cylinders, sending two shots in the fourth minute with both missing wide. The early pressure led to an early goal when Taylor Yount put one home with 8:23 on the clock to lift the Bulldogs to an early lead. Samford kept the pressure up, sending shot after shot, and at 23:42 the Bulldogs struck again. With assists from Ella Simpson and Alyssa Frazier, Kylie Gazza found the top right corner of the goal to put the Bulldogs ahead 2-0. Samford would total 11 shots before Wofford could get off their first, which came in the 34
th minute when
Caileen Almeida had a chance, but it was saved. The Terriers had one last chance before halftime, but
McKenzie Guest's shot was off target, and the Terriers entered the break down by two goals.
The Bulldogs came out on the attack again, missing off target with a shot in the 47
th minute. They fired off four more shots, and then Mary Raymond sent a fifth that succeeded, slotting home the third goal of the night for the Bulldogs into the bottom right corner at the 57:09 mark. Alyssa Frazier and Alyssa Conarton contributed the assists.
McKenzie Guest gave another try in the 62
nd minute, but it was saved again. Samford tried a couple more times before
Karen Majewski was booked for a yellow card. Wofford, however, tried for the comeback with a blocked shot in the 84
th minute. Samford's Tatum Loveless received a yellow card in the 85
th minute, and
Addie Marlett's subsequent shot was saved.
McKenzie Guest finally connected with 85:54 on the clock when she put one home in the top right corner to get the Terriers on the board. It was too little, too late, though, as
Ashley Grant put on one last shot for Wofford in the 89
th minute, which was saved to preserve the 3-1 Bulldog victory.
Wofford (3-10-0, 1-3-0) only had seven shots on the night in comparison to 21 for Samford (8-3-2, 5-0-0). The Bulldogs also held a significant advantage in corners, 10-1.
Caroline Doss (0-3-0) picked up six saves in goal for the Terriers. Her counterpart, Morgan McAslan (8-3-2), had four saves on the night for the Bulldogs.
The Terriers continue their weekend road trip on Sunday when they take on the Chattanooga Mocs at the UTC Sports Complex. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm.
