Volleyball Notches First Ever Series Sweep Over ETSU, 3-0

Terriers move to 4-2 in the SoCon with a 3-0 sweep over the Bucs

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Behind a season-high .365 hitting percentage and match-high 12 kills from sophomore Kennedy Smith, the Terriers replicated their offensive prowess from Sunday night in corralling its first ever series sweep in program history over the ETSU Bucs (4-2, 4-2 SoCon) with a 3-0 sweep (25-15, 25-21, 25-10) at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on Monday evening. The win vaults Wofford to 4-2 overall and in the Southern Conference.

Smith, a native of Huntersville, N.C., led the team on a .455 hitting percentage along with six digs and a block, while classmate Bella Zeman followed with nine kills and two solo blocks on the night. Senior middle blocker Riley Coonan also added nine kills on 11 swings and no errors on a career-high .818 hitting percentage and two blocks for the Terriers.

Freshman Millie Loehr was solid at the net, tallying five kills and four blocks, as Sarah Barham also recorded five kills and two blocks in the win. Emily Hodsdon notched a career-high four service aces and tallied a match-high 39 assists along with five digs, while Abbey Richman corralled a match-high 12 digs to go with two assists and a service ace.

Sophomore Chasidy Sharpe recorded a season-high two service aces in the match, as freshman Kaitlyn Brown and senior Emily Durham registered eight and five digs, respectively.

Wofford was on point with a season-low 10 errors on the match, while blazing the Bucs in the third set with a .565 hitting percentage on 14 kills to earn the sweep. The Terriers' defense was also superb, holding ETSU to a season-low .065 hitting percentage for the match.

Wofford held the edge from the very beginning, jumping out to a 15-10 advantage to force an ETSU timeout midway through the first set. Both teams traded points prior to a Kennedy Smith kill from Hodsdon allowing the Terriers to hold serve for the remainder of the set. Chasidy Sharpe held serve for the Terriers, kick-starting a five-point run that deflated the Bucs in the first set, 25-15. During the run, three ETSU errors, including a Millie Loehr solo block, set up a 23-15 lead. Sharpe then landed an ace on ETSU's Sydney Cherney before Loehr would send home a kill to conclude the set in Wofford's favor.

The Terriers came out in the second set spirited, up 5-1 early, before ETSU stormed back to knot things up at 7-7. After exchanging points, kills from Smith and Riley Coonan allowed for a 14-11 cushion, as an ETSU attack error and solo block from Bella Zeman then forced the Bucs to talk things over, trailing 16-12. The Bucs cut the margin to two, after an Emily Hodsdon ace ensued out the break, though, Wofford held steady with a 21-18 lead late. The Bucs brought the deficit to one (22-21), though, resilience on kills by Coonan and Zeman set up Emily Hodsdon on serve, as Hodsdon connected on back-to-back aces to claim the set victory, 25-21.

Wofford blitzed ETSU in the third, busting a 12-4 lead to again force ETSU to call a timeout. With Chasidy Sharpe on serve, the Terriers pushed a 4-0 run as kills from Coonan and Barham went on to set up an 11-point lead at 19-8. A subsequent ETSU attack error forced another timeout, at 20-8, before another Hodsdon service ace and Kelly Hubbard kill pushed a 22-8 spread. Zeman collected her ninth kill, prior to a Kelly Hubbard block and Kennedy Smith swing ending a 25-10 rout to close the match.

Next, the Terriers (4-2, 4-2 SoCon) travel to Cullowhee, N.C. on Wednesday, February 24, for a makeup of the first match in Wofford's series at Western Carolina. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. at the Ramsey Regional Activity Center.
