JOHNSON CITY, TN. – The Wofford women's soccer team made a morning travel to Johnson City to take on ETSU on Friday afternoon, bringing an important 1-0 win back to Spartanburg to stay in the playoff hunt. The Terriers remain three points behind Chattanooga who are in control of the 4
th and final playoff position.
With two games remaining in the regular season, Wofford is in 5
th place with 10 points with a 3-3-1 record, while the Mocs are at 13 points after their win over The Citadel. ETSU falls to 1-4-1 in SoCon play, sitting with 4 points.
ETSU had the first shot attempt of the game in the 4
th minute, but it was Wofford who struck first with
Dani Segovia in the 7
th minute.
Mia Bookhard whipped in a cross that
Katie Gilligan was able to pick up, she put a shot on goal that was saved, but Segovia was waiting for the rebound and tapped it into the yawning net. The Terriers tried to extend the lead quickly after the restart, but it was the Bucs who had the best chance as
Maria Mon had to come up with two saves to keep the early 1-0 edge. Wofford had the last chance of the half with
Haley McCaffrey taking a shot form long distance, but nothing that tested the Bucs goalkeeper as the Terriers held the 1-0 lead at halftime.
Wofford started the second half with just as much pressure as the first as Gilligan took a spinning shot, but didn't get much behind it and was unable to tack onto the lead. ETSU came back with some pressure of their own with just over 20 minutes left, but Mon came out and collected any loose ball that seemed threatening to keep it a 1-0 game. The Terriers were awarded a corner with 11 minutes left, but Segovia's header went wide. Gilligan followed that up with a strike from 20 yards, but it was straight at the keeper. A late penalty shout from the ETSU bench wasn't given by the referee as Wofford's defense stayed strong and allowed the Terriers to come away with the win.
Segovia's lone goal was her first of the season, and gave Wofford what they needed to get their second ever win at ETSU, their first since 1998. Gilligan recorded her team-leading third assist of the year as the Terriers had more shots (11-8), shots on goal (7-3), and corner kicks (6-0).
