ATLANTA, Ga. – On Tuesday, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 4-3 in 14 innings by Georgia State at the GSU Baseball Complex. The Terriers scored a run in the top of the first inning and added a run in the top of the ninth. The Panthers scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at 2-2. After four scoreless extra innings, the Terriers scored one run in the top of the 14
th for the lead and the Panthers answered with two runs in the bottom of the 14
th for the 4-3 final score.
Wofford is 24-15 overall and Georgia State is 11-32 on the season. Wofford had eight hits in the game and the Panthers had nine hits, five of which were doubles.
Lawson Hill led the Terriers with two hits.
NOTABLES
- It was the third extra innings contest of the season for Wofford with the Terriers 2-1. Wofford last played a 14-inning game in 2018 at Charlotte.
- The meeting was the first between the two teams since 2006.
- The Terriers have played in twelve one-run games this season and are 9-3 in those games.
- Wofford starter Devon Sharts threw three innings with one hit allowed and four strikeouts. Luke Stephens went the next three innings and gave up one hit with three strikeouts. Zach Byron added a three-up, three-down inning. Dalton Rhadans allowed two runs on two hits with two strikeouts in 2.0 innings. Matthew Marchal (1-2) went 4.1 innings with two runs allowed on four hits and a career-high six strikeouts. Dom Marcoccio gave up one hit in a third of an inning.
- Dylan Matela started for Georgia State and went two innings with one run allowed. Tyler Koch threw a clean inning. Duncan Lutz threw 3.1 innings with one hit allowed and a strikeout. Seth Clark went 2.2 innings with one run allowed on two hits and a strikeout. Camren Landry worked three innings and did not allow a hit. Brandon Haston (2-0) went 2.0 innings with one run allowed on three hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wofford had the bases loaded in the top of the first on two walks and a single by Jack Renwick. A sacrifice fly by Zeb Roos plated a run for a 1-0 lead, but two runners were stranded.
- The Terriers left one runner on base in the second inning. The Panthers had their first base runner in the bottom of the third with a single before he was caught stealing second.
- In the top of the fourth Wofford left one runner on base. Georgia State had a single with one out in the bottom of the fifth however the runner was thrown out at third to end the inning.
- Both teams were retired in order in the sixth inning. John Dempsey singled to lead off the seventh but was thrown out trying to make it a double. Wofford left one runner on base after a fielding error.
- The Panthers had a batter hit by a pitch in the bottom of the eighth but was stranded.
- Trey Yunger led off the top of the ninth with a single and Zeb Roos was hit by a pitch. A fielder's choice bunt by John Dempsey had Yunger out at third base. Ryan Galanie had a pinch-hit double that scored Roos for a 2-0 lead with Dempsey out at home on the play.
- In the bottom of the ninth, the Panthers led off with a double. With one out a walk was followed by a double that drove in both runners for a 2-2 game.
- With one out in the top of the tenth, Nolen Hester reached on an error. He was out trying to advance to second and a fly ball ended the top half. The Panthers had two out in the bottom of the tenth when a double was followed by a ground out.
- Lawson Hill led off the top of the 11th with a single and was out at second on a fielder's choice. A fly ball and ground ball ended the top half. Georgia State was retired in order.
- Wofford left one runner on base in the top of the 12th after a walk. With two outs in the bottom of the inning, the Panthers had a double before a foul out ended the frame.
- With one out in the top of the 13th, Lawson Hill singled but was unable to advance. The Panthers went down in order in the bottom of the inning.
- The Terriers had two outs in the top of the 14th when Shane Lussier doubled and he scored on a single by Matty Brown for a 3-2 lead. The Panthers led off with a single and with one out an RBI double tied the game at 3-3. With two outs, a pinch-hit single drove in the winning run for a 4-3 final margin.

The Terriers will host Samford for a three-game weekend series beginning with a single game on Friday, April 30 at 5:00 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday, May 1.
