SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 9-8 by Samford at Russell C. King Field on Friday night. The Bulldogs scored seven runs in the top of the third inning to build an 8-2 advantage through four innings. The Terriers chipped away at the lead and trailed 9-8 after eight innings, but both teams were retired in order in the ninth inning.
Wofford is 24-16 overall and 12-7 in the SoCon. Samford is 24-17 on the season and 14-5 in league play. There were a total of 26 hits in the game, with 12 by the Terriers and 14 by the Bulldogs.
Trey Yunger led the Terriers with three hits and three runs scored.
NOTABLES
- A single in the fifth inning by Colin Davis marked his 200th career hit. He is the 11th player in school history to reach the 200 hit mark. Davis added a home run in the seventh inning, the 32nd of his career.
- Josh Vitus (1-3) started for Wofford and allowed seven runs on seven hits in two innings. Sam Stratton threw 4.1 innings in relief with one run allowed on five hits and two strikeouts. Dom Marcoccio went two-thirds of an inning with one hit allowed. Luke Stephens gave up one run in the final two innings.
- Samford starter Samuel Strickland worked four innings with four runs allowed on six hits, along with three strikeouts. Carson Cupo (7-0) threw two innings and gave up two runs on four hits. Gene Hurst allowed one run in a third of an inning. Blake Bortak gave up a run in two-thirds of an inning. Charles Crosby worked two-thirds of an inning with one hit allowed. Chase Isbell went the final 1.1 innings without allowing a hit for his seventh save of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bulldogs left two runners on base in the top of the first inning after a pair of singles and stranded one in the top of the second. Jack Renwick walked with one out in the bottom of the second and Zeb Roos followed with a single. After a double steal, a ground out by John Dempsey scored Renwick for a 1-0 lead at the end of two innings.
- In the top of the third, Samford had the bases loaded. A single drove in a run and a grand slam home run pushed the lead to 5-1. A single and a home run followed for a 7-1 advantage.
- Wofford had one out in the bottom of the third when Trey Yunger singled and Colin Davis walked. After a double steal, a ground out by Lawson Hill plated Yunger to cut the lead to 7-2.
- Samford added solo home run with two outs in the top of the fourth inning to make it 8-2 and Wofford left one runner on base in the bottom of the inning after a single by John Dempsey.
- Matty Brown led off the bottom of the fifth with a single and Trey Yunger followed with a single An RBI single by Colin Davis scored Brown and a single by Lawson Hill drove in Yunger to make it an 8-4 game.
- The Bulldogs added two more hits in the top of the sixth inning, but were unable to score. Brennen Dorighi singled with two outs in the bottom of the sixth for the Terriers.
- Samford left one runner on base in the top of the seventh and Trey Yunger led off the bottom half of the inning with a double. Colin Davis hit his eighth home run of the season and the lead was down to 8-6. Lawson Hill walked and Nolen Hester was hit by a pitch, while a walk to Jack Renwick loaded the bases. With one out a single by John Dempsey plated a run but the Bulldogs turned a double play to keep an 8-7 advantage.
- In the top of the eighth, a walk was followed by an RBI double to extend the lead to 9-7. Matty Brown drew a lead-off walk to start the bottom half of the inning. He stole second with two outs and scored on a single by Lawson Hill.
- Both teams were retired in order in the ninth inning for a 9-8 final score.
