Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader For Series Win Over Samford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In a doubleheader on Saturday, the Wofford College baseball team swept both games against Samford at Russell C. King Field. The first game was tied at five when Wofford scored one run each in the sixth and eighth innings for the 7-5 win. In game two, the score was tied at four through seven innings. In the top of the ninth, a two-run homer by the Bulldogs put them on top. Wofford rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth for the 7-6 victory.
 
Wofford is 26-16 overall and 14-7 in the SoCon. Samford is 24-19 on the season and 14-7 in league play. By winning both games on Saturday, the Terriers secured the series win over the Bulldogs for the first time since 2017. All three games in the weekend series were decided by two runs or less.
 
GAME ONE NOTABLES
  • The Terriers had ten hits in the game, led by Nolen Hester with three hits. Brennen Dorighi added two RBIs.The Bulldogs had nine hits, with four players having two each.
  • Wofford had a stolen base in the game by Jack Renwick, giving the team 100 on the season. It marks eight straight times the Terriers have stolen 100+ bases in a season.
  • Devon Sharts started for Wofford and went a season-long 3.2 innings with a career-high seven strikeouts as he allowed five runs on six hits. Zach Byron worked 1.1 innings and allowed one hit. Dalton Rhadans (5-0) went the final four innings without allowing a run on two hits and a career-high eight strikeouts.
  • Samford starter Jesse McCord threw three innings with five runs allowed on seven hits. Jalon Long (1-2) gave up two runs on three hits in the final five innings.
 
GAME ONE HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a lead-off hit by pitch, a double gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead before three strikeouts ended the top of the first inning. Wofford was retired in order in the first.
  • Samford opened the second inning with a double and with two outs an RBI double made it a 2-0 game. Jack Renwick walked with one out and stole second. A double with two outs by Zeb Roos drove in Renwick for a 2-1 game.
  • The Bulldogs went in order in the top of the third. With one out, Nolen Hester and Colin Davis singled. A single up the middle by Lawson Hill scored Hester to tie the game. Trey Yunger was hit by a pitch to load the bases and a single by Jack Renwick gave Wofford a 3-2 lead. A single by Brennen Dorighi with the addition of a fielding error allowed two runs to score and a walk to Zeb Roos had the bases loaded again but all three runners were stranded at the end of the inning with Wofford holding a 5-2 advantage.
  • In the top of the fourth, Samford led off with a pair of singles and with two outs a double plated both runs to cut the lead to 5-4. An RBI single up the middle tied the game at 5-5.
  • Nolen Hester opened the bottom of the fourth with a double and Colin Davis followed with a walked, but the Terriers were unable to score. Both teams were retired in order in the fifth inning.
  • The first two batters for Samford in the top of the sixth were hit by pitch however they were unable to advance. John Dempsey led off the bottom half with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A double down the right line by Nolen Hester drove in Dempsey for a 6-5 lead.
  • After Samford was retired in order in the top of the seventh, Wofford left one runner on base in the bottom of the frame after Brennen Dorighi reached on an error.
  • The Bulldogs left runners at second and third base in the top of the eighth with two out when a strikeout ended the scoring opportunity. John Dempsey led off the bottom of the frame with a single and Nolen Hester walked. An error on a fielder's choice by Colin Davis scored Dempsey for a 7-5 advantage.
  • In the top of the ninth, a leadoff single was followed by the runner caught stealing. A walk was followed by a strikeout and great catch in left field by Zeb Roos to end the game.
 
GAME TWO NOTABLES
  • The Terriers had seven hits in the game, led by Colin Davis with two hits and three RBIs. Samford had eight hits, with three by Tyler McManus.
  • Wofford starter Elliot Carney worked 6.1 innings and gave up four runs on seven hits. He struck out five batters and did not issue a walk. Clay Schwaner (4-0) went the final 2.2 innings with two unearned runs allowed on one hit and a career-high five strikeouts.
  • Zach Hester started for Samford and went six innings with two runs allowed on two hits, along with six strikeouts. Hamp Skinner threw two innings and gave up two runs on one hit. Chase Isbell (2-2) closed the game and allowed three runs on four hits in a third of an inning.
 
GAME TWO HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bulldogs had a solo home run with two outs in the top of the first inning. Wofford stranded two runners in the bottom of the first and two in the bottom of the second inning.
  • Samford had a double with two outs in the third but the runner was left on base after a strikeout.
  • After Wofford went in order to end the third inning, the Bulldogs led off the fourth with a double and hit by pitch. They advanced on a sacrifice bunt and a run scored on an infield single for a 2-0 lead. Two Bulldogs were left on base.
  • Jack Renwick walked and John Dempsey singled to give Wofford runners on the corners with no outs in the bottom of the fourth. A sacrifice bunt by Cameron Gill scored Renwick for a 2-1 game. Matty Brown singled to right center and scored Dempsey to tie the game at 2-2.
  • Both teams were retired in order in the fifth inning and a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning gave the Bulldogs a 3-2 advantage. Wofford went in order in the bottom of the sixth.
  • In the top of the seventh, the Bulldogs had the bases loaded with one out. A ground out plated a run and a strikeout ended the top half with Samford's lead at 4-2.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Nolen Hester walked. On the first pitch to Colin Davis, he belted it over the fence in left field to tie the game at four. It was his ninth home run of the season.
  • Samford drew a lead-off walk in the top of the eighth, which was followed by back-to-back strikeouts. A fielder's choice ended the top half. Wofford was retired in order on three straight strikeouts in the bottom of the eighth.
  • The Bulldogs had one out in the top of the ninth when a batter reached on an error. With two outs, a home run to left center gave Samford a 6-4 advantage.
  • Wofford led off the bottom of the ninth with a single by Cameron Gill. With one out, a pinch-hit double by Brennen Dorighi drove in a run for a 6-5 score. Nolen Hester walked and an RBI single by Colin Davis tied the game at six. A walk to Lawson Hill had the bases loaded with one out. An infield single by Trey Yunger plated the winning run for a 7-6 final score.
